Marine Raider Nick Jones was wounded during an operation in Iraq that claimed the lives of Capt. Moises A. Navas and Gunnery Sgt. Diego D. Pongo. The years that followed brought multiple surgeries, medical retirement, and the difficult process of navigating injury, grief, and life beyond the team.

As he sought support, Jones found that art and other approaches to recovery helped him begin to process what he had experienced. He went on to establish Talons Reach Foundation, named in honor of his close friend Sgt. Talon Leach, who died in a military aircraft crash in 2017. Today, the foundation brings special operations personnel together for retreats focused on education, tools for recovery, and connection.

Nick spoke with SOAA about his service, the teammates he carries with him, and his commitment to helping others find support.

We’ve been waiting to share this one.

Plan to spend November 14th, 2026, with us in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

This year, Talons Reach Foundation is changing things up. Instead of hosting our annual Eagles Gala in Bozeman, we’re bringing it into the Veterans Ball for one bigger night together in Jackson Hole.

And we could not be more excited about what this night is becoming.

The Veterans Ball is bigger than any one organization, branch, uniform, or generation. It’s a chance to get everyone in the same room. Veterans and active-duty service members. Families and friends. The civilians who stand behind this community and the people who have supported our mission year after year.

Some of our favorite memories have been made with all of you at the Eagles Gala, and while the location and name may look a little different this year, the heart behind it hasn’t changed. We’re just making the table bigger.

So if you’ve joined us in Bozeman in years past, Jackson Hole is where you’ll find us this year. And if you’ve never been to one of our events before, this is a pretty dang good year to start.

I was excited for this conversation for reasons that went beyond just getting the chance to talk about Talons Reach!

I’ve read @AndyStumpf212’s 'Drownproof' twice, which is saying something because there aren’t many books I’ve read twice. The first time I connected with it. The second time, I realized how similarly we think about a lot of things.

So going into this conversation, I had a feeling it was going to be different.

I knew we’d talk about the mission and the work we’re doing, but I also knew I wasn’t going to have to spend the whole conversation walking back through the darkest days of my life. There’s a time and a place for those stories, but there is a hell of a lot more to who we become afterward.

Andy understands that.

We are not defined by the jobs we had, the titles we carried, or what we once did for a living. Those things are part of our story, but they aren’t the whole story. What matters is how we carry ourselves when those titles are gone. How we treat people. What we choose to build. What we do with the life in front of us.

That’s the conversation I was hoping to have.

Talons Reach Foundation will be there all morning, and this one is pretty special to us! 1% of every purchase made at the market will go directly back to TRF and the work we do for our Special Operations community.

We’ll have free hats, stickers, and plenty of information about what we do and how to get involved. We’re also bringing a pull-up bar and may have a little friendly competition going. Come show us what you’ve got!💪

You wanna be a cowboy? Ladies and gentlemen let me tell you, that stuff is no joke.

My buddy @tdavis157 asked me if I wanted to wrestle a steer. He said it would be easy they are around people all the time it’s just entertaining.. not too hard but it takes technique.

Well let me tell you, that was way harder than he made it out to be. My steer was big, angry, strong, and did not want me touching him. He threw me around like a rag doll. @chefjeremywilliamson and @jhmmamorning and I chased him around to try to finish but he had other plans.

Wild and fun times but I’ll be a wannabe cowboy from the sidelines and leave the bull riding and wrestling to the professionals. Those are some brave men and women out there and have my upmost respect. 🫡

If you’re debating getting family photos, do it 🥹 this is the first time we have and I wish I got more done sooner!

Ps to all my one & done mamas…I fought for a while wondering if it’s selfish of us to just have 1…but what’s selfish is knowing your own capacity and having more due to family or societal pressure. You are not lesser of a mother because you have one and your neighbor has 4. I also struggled with that. The quality of a mama lies in the time attention and love you can provide your children and I would argue even more so, it lies in the mental health quality of yourself. Take care of you and understand your limits, then respect them, and you’ll be unstoppable.
