Leaving Krabi was a bit emotional.

On our last full day, we hired a driver who had given us her card in case we wanted to explore more of Krabi’s surroundings. We didn’t get to experience everything we had hoped to because the weather wasn’t ideal for some activities, but the experiences we did have made us feel truly immersed in the local community.

We took a cooking class that was practically private, had a personal driver who drove us for hours to and from a café tucked away in the forest and then to the hot springs, and even got to have her child as our little copilot along the way. (Last image is of Samil) These moments may seem simple, but they are the ones I know I’ll remember most.

Then, waking up and seeing the horrific news coming from back home in Austin truly broke my heart.

Throughout our entire time in Thailand, I never once felt unsafe. We traveled without knowing the language, relying heavily on the kindness of people we had never met. Local people welcomed two Americans into their restaurants, engaged with us, guided us, drove us, shared their homes and traditions with us and never once did I feel judged or looked at differently.

In fact, I feel compelled to say that I have felt safer in Thailand than I often do back home.

I leave Thailand with an immense amount of gratitude and respect for its people and culture. I’ve been reminded that kindness is universal, and that hospitality, compassion and respect can transcend language, nationality, skin color and religion.

The vibrancy of Chiang Mai isn’t just something you see in its temples, markets, and breathtaking landscapes, it’s something you feel through the people who call this place home.

The way we were welcomed and treated is simple to explain: KINDNESS.

We’re so grateful to have experienced a culture that embraces such a deep sense of gratitude for life, for nature, and for humanity. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful parts of a place aren’t what you see, but what you feel while you’re there.

No words to describe today. The privilege of getting to visit the Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai was beyond surreal. Twelve elephants. Twelve incredible stories.

Watching a goofy, ridiculous 4-month old playing in the water and annoying the hell out of its mother, preparing vitamins and supplement treat-balls for everyone, and even helping prepare and applying a traditional Thai herbal compress to 67 year old sweet arthritic girl who had the hardest life. The privilege of caring for these elephants is something we’ll never forget.

We spent a lot of time researching this and talking to friends who have been to Thailand. We’re so grateful to y’all who recommended this. We’re so lucky to be one of the last groups to be able to participate in this format of volunteering with the elephant husbandry and care.

Calling yourself a sanctuary doesn’t make it so. Full stop.

What the sanctuary here is doing is beyond that. The reverence, devotion, love, and care we were not only able to see, but participate in first hand can’t even be described. Forever grateful. by @its.the.hector

The home is very unique and rich of history.

He was an American who fell in love with Thailand and popularized Thai silk by bringing it to NYC and then one day he vanished while visiting Malaysia.
