For many black women, including myself, hair is an opportunity for self-expression. It’s an opportunity for artwork.  Laura Perez believes everyone is an artist! There are so many ways to wear our hair and so much deep history behind many styles. Growing up in a white community as a mixed kid was difficult. I was the only black kid in my elementary school, which was a regular-sized one. My mom always had relaxers in her hair and my dad was bald. My mom wouldn’t let me get relaxers because she said they ruined her hair, so I wore my natural hair to school every day. It was long, almost down to my waist at one point, and a beautiful light brown with natural highlights. But I felt ugly. I wished I could do a braid chain with my friends and that I could wake up from a sleepover and not have bedhead ( curly girls know). I felt most beautiful when my mom would flat iron my hair every few months. I felt like I fit.
During COVID, my mom quit keratin treatments and started her loc journey. I remember I judged her for it and secretly thought it looked messy- what would people think when we went out? They always seemed to stare. Her hair didn’t fit everyone around us anymore.
I grew older, and looked inside myself and reflected on the hatred for my hair- and the idea it had to be perfect at all times, sleek, gel’d, straight, white. Making face, and making heart involves a labor of deconstruction and reconstruction. ( an idea by Laura Pereź- Making Face is a term assigned to the idea of how WOC have to endure expectations (usually oppressive or unfair in some way), and allows us to recreate ourselves, inside and outside.) I have deconstructed the idea of what I have to look like- what the right kind of Black woman has to look like and reconstructed a new version of myself. This March ( Today!) I will have had my locs for a full year:) I may not have them forever, but I know if I unloc it will be going go back to my curls and use them as my art form and tool of self-expression. by @its_lady_rayc
