SPIRITUAL GANGSTER

Acrylic on canvas

3 by 3ft

From the series: If Colours Truly Define Us

Spiritual Gangster challenges the assumptions we make about morality, redemption, and identity. Society often equates certain appearances with holiness and others with corruption, forgetting that neither virtue nor evil has a fixed appearance.

The figure embodies this contradiction. Adorned in sacred vestments yet marked with tattoos associated with a troubled past, the work blurs the line between the sinner and the saint. It reflects those who outwardly present themselves as righteous while concealing harmful intentions, as well as those whose appearances are shaped by a former life but whose hearts have genuinely transformed.

The coloured skin continues the central inquiry of If Colours Truly Define Us, questioning whether appearance can ever reveal a person’s true character. If colour, clothing, or symbols of faith are enough to define us, where do sincerity, growth, and redemption exist?

Spiritual Gangster invites viewers to look beyond appearances and reconsider the way they judge others. It reminds us that spirituality is not something worn on the body, but something lived through intention, action, and transformation.

CHAMELEON

Acrylic on canvas

20 by 24cm
From the series: If Colours Truly Define Us

Chameleon explores the fluidity of identity and the many versions of ourselves that emerge in different spaces. Like a chameleon adapting to its surroundings, people often shift their personalities, emotions, and behaviours in response to changing environments, relationships, and expectations.

The figure’s body is composed of multiple colours that seamlessly transition into one another, rejecting the idea of a single, fixed identity. Rather than representing deception, these changing colours reflect the complexity of being human. We are not always the same person in every room, yet each version remains an authentic part of who we are.

As part of If Colours Truly Define Us, Chameleon questions the belief that a single colour, or a single moment, can define a person. Instead, it proposes that identity is ever-changing, shaped by experience, circumstance, and growth. If our colours are constantly changing, perhaps no single colour can ever tell the whole story.

*True Color

* Acrylic on canvas

*3 by 3 ft

From the series: If Colours Truly Define Us

True Color questions the idea that identity can be understood through what is immediately visible. Society often reduces people to appearances, assigning meaning to colour before taking the time to understand the individual beneath it.

In this work, the figure’s outer red surface appears to peel away, exposing a vibrant yellow beneath. This exposed layer symbolizes an inner self that exists beyond outward perception, a reminder that our true colour is not determined by the surface, but by the experiences, emotions, resilience, and humanity that shape us.

The braided hair extends beyond the body like threads connecting the figure to unseen influences, while the ladybugs represent hope, renewal, and transformation. Together, these elements suggest that identity is constantly evolving rather than fixed by appearance.

As part of If Colours Truly Define Us, True Color invites viewers to reconsider the assumptions they make based on what they see. It asks a simple but profound question: if colour truly defines us, whose definition are we living by, our own, or society’s?

* ROADMEN

*Acrylic on canvas

*3 by 4ft

Roadmen (from the series: If Colours Truly Define Us)

Roadmen examines how society forms judgments based on appearance and cultural stereotypes. In the UK, young men dressed in balaclavas, puffer jackets, and streetwear are often perceived as threatening and are frequently associated with crime and violence.

The figures in this painting deliberately adopt poses that appear confrontational and intimidating. However, instead of drawing weapons, they reveal flowers, symbols of beauty, tenderness, affection, and humanity.

Their skin is painted in blue, green, and yellow, colours that are rarely associated with danger. These colours were intentionally chosen to challenge the viewer’s expectations. If colour truly defines us, then these figures should be perceived as harmless, welcoming, or peaceful. Yet many viewers may still feel uneasy because of the clothing they wear and the assumptions attached to it.

The work questions which visual cues society chooses to trust. Why does a balaclava outweigh a flower? Why does a stereotype outweigh an individual? By placing symbols of softness within bodies and poses coded as threatening, Roadmen exposes how prejudice can shape perception more powerfully than reality.

Ultimately, the painting invites viewers to reflect on how quickly they judge others and how often those judgments are based on appearance rather than character.

Among Emmanuel Bankole’s collaborations, Seed of Infinite Possibilities II shines with a special resonance. Created alongside @its_lines (Owadasa Roland), the work began as Roland’s sketch and was reborn through @nuel_arts (Emmanuel Bankole)’s fabric-on-canvas medium — a dialogue between what we are given (gifts/talents) and its great potential. by @its_lines

NEW ART 🖼️

Stuck in Space

Dragged through keys of endless light,
A body swallowed by the night.
Hands reach out, but none can save,
From digital tides and the web’s cold grave.

Children of shadow pull me near,
Whispers louder than I hear.
They blind my eyes, they choke my breath,
Each click a birth, each scroll a death.

The mask I wore drifts far away,
A hollow face with nothing to say.
Stars spill out from a lettered gate,
Infinity typed, yet too late.

I reach for ground, I reach for air,
But silence answers, nothing’s there.
Suspended in a cosmic scroll,
A captive mind, a swallowed soul. by @its_lines

THE TIES THAT BUILDS
A collaboration with @radissonhotellagosikeja
Featuring Owadasa Roland, Adewale Ojo and Delaiah Oyawale

Art does not grow in isolation, it flourishes through connection. The Ties That Build is an exhibition rooted in the belief that creativity thrives when nurtured by community, collaboration, and shared opportunity. This show reflects the gallery’s mission to uplift artists by creating a space where diverse voices are not only seen but supported.

Through the work of Owadasa Roland, Adewale Ojo and Delaiah Oyawale, the exhibition explores the many forms of unity between individuals and artistic practices. Each artist brings a unique perspective shaped by personal experience, yet their works resonate with a common message: that our strength lies in the bonds we form.

From creative illustrations, communication and identity to bold celebrations of individual artistic styles and mutual support, the artworks in The Ties That Build reveal how difference becomes connection, and how unity becomes a foundation for growth.

Together, these artists remind us that it is the ties we build, not just the work we make, that shape the creative journey. by @its_lines
