🇫🇷 Au revoir, France! Next stop, Leipzig! 🇩🇪🎬
France has given me plenty to think about, but two things are particularly staying with me.
First, I really want to learn French! 😂 Not because it’s mandatory to succeed in the African film industry, but because I want to better understand, engage with and do business across Francophone African markets.
Our linguistic divisions are deeply rooted in colonial history, but language can also become a bridge. And the more we communicate directly across African markets, the more opportunities we create for collaboration.
Second, there’s growing interest from major international investors and industry players in Africa’s creative economy. And while that’s exciting, we need to be prepared!
We need to understand our markets, know the value of our intellectual property, negotiate fair agreements and develop innovative business models. Otherwise, we risk entering partnerships where others benefit more from our stories, audiences and creative resources than we do.
Africa shouldn’t just be an attractive market for investment. Africans should be equipped to negotiate, own and benefit from that investment.
And with that, my France chapter comes to an end!
Next stop: DOK Leipzig, where we’re diving into the world of documentary, animation, pitching and the business behind it all.
The learning continues!

Following our visit to the CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée) in France, I’ve been thinking about what stronger international co-production partnerships could mean for Kenyan cinema.
France already has co-production treaties with several African countries. So, why not Kenya?
But before we get too excited, let’s talk about the opportunities AND the trade-offs.
The pros:
- Access to additional financing opportunities, incentives and production resources.
- Opportunities to share expertise, talent and technical capacity.
- Potential to reach new audiences and international markets.
- Under qualifying treaties, recognition as a national production in both countries.
The cons:
- More complicated financing, legal agreements and administrative processes.
- Creative compromises when partners have different expectations.
- Potential imbalances in negotiating power and ownership.
- More stakeholders can mean slower decision-making and higher coordination costs.
And here’s something important: a co-production treaty doesn’t automatically guarantee funding, distribution or commercial success.
Kenya already has the talent, growing industry infrastructure and international relationships to build on. The question is how we develop partnerships that are genuinely beneficial to our filmmakers.
For me, the goal isn’t simply to make more international co-productions. It’s to negotiate better partnerships, protect our creative interests and build sustainable film businesses.
Would a Kenya–France co-production treaty be a worthwhile next step?

Some places are beautiful in pictures, but experiencing them with your own eyes is something else entirely. 🥹⛪❤️
Walking into Église Saint-Sulpice in Paris was one of those moments where I just wanted to stand still, look around and take it all in.
Construction of this magnificent church began in 1646!and over the centuries, it has become home to extraordinary works of art, including paintings by Eugène Delacroix and one of France’s most celebrated pipe organs. Imagine the history, the prayers, the stories and the generations that have passed through these walls!
There’s something incredibly humbling about standing in a place that has witnessed so much history and continues to be a place of worship.
I don’t think any photograph could have prepared me for the feeling of actually being there.

France offers an interesting lesson in audience development, particularly through its approach to introducing children to cinema from an early age.
And Kenya isn’t starting from zero! Initiatives like @tungaafrika are already doing important work bringing African films into schools.
The opportunity now is to build on that foundation. Imagine film education becoming a more intentional part of Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum, while creating new revenue opportunities for filmmakers and exhibitors through school screenings during quieter cinema hours.
Film education. Audience development. Exhibition. It’s all connected.
Perhaps growing the future of Kenyan cinema starts in our classrooms.
Welcome to the France chapter of Distribution Diaries!

Somewhere between the little streets of Paris, the beautiful buildings, and finally standing beneath the Eiffel Tower, I had one of those moments where life feels a little surreal. 🥹❤️
No rushing, no thinking about what’s next. Just me, taking it all in and quietly appreciating how far life has brought me.
Little me would have loved this. Actually, grown me does too. 🥹✨
Paris, you were a dream!

Done with my Berlin and Hamburg classes, now headed to Paris, France. What I’ve learnt so far, we are not building from Zero as the Kenyan film industry. We definitely need more policy, structure and defined bodies to help us create solutions. Excited to see how the French cinema industry operates and how we can export our films, especially there.
See you on the next one! And yes, i have gotten better at time management 😂

I’ve watched the films, and Nairobi, you’re in for a treat!
African animation is giving us everything from hilarious storytelling to social commentary and some seriously impressive visual work!
🇳🇬 SIP — As a creative, this one hit a little too close to home. My vice might not be coffee, but that innocent five-minute doom-scroll? 😭
🇺🇬 Lice n Shine and Who Killed Captain Alex — Uganda came ready to ENTERTAIN!
🇰🇪 Death Valley and A Big Sad Nairobi 2 — Kenyan filmmakers are using animation to unpack some very real societal issues.
🇪🇬 My Brother, My Brother — A beautiful balance of emotional storytelling and visual execution. One to look out for!
They also have @hope_short_film from 🇺🇸, The spaces between Time from 🇰🇪and Thabaye from 🇿🇦
And the best part? You get to experience these films at @shortsshortsshots this Sunday!
We’re talking African animated shorts, a gaming corner featuring @hiruthegame ,creative fashion, a best-dressed prize, shots (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), and a chance to connect with Nairobi’s creative community.

Meet @hiruthegame , a Kenyan-developed 3D action-adventure game by @kuntacontent inspired by Maasai culture and African mythology. The story follows a Maasai warrior on a mission to rescue his kidnapped sister.
And beyond the gameplay, there’s a bigger conversation here: gaming is an opportunity for African storytellers, animators, writers, voice actors and developers to build entire worlds of their own.
Now here’s the exciting part!
You can discover HIRU at the gaming corner during @shortsshortsshots , alongside a selection of African animated short films, fashion, cosplay-inspired looks, drinks and a whole lot of creative energy!
