Exactly one year ago today, I made this song called “each time a shade softer”. I had thought about making it for so long but had struggled putting my thoughts into words. Now here I stand, a year later, and looking back I am struck by how much emotional weight this piece holds today. “each time a shade softer” talks about the moment you truly see someone you love for the first time. Not the version of them you built up in your head but the person who is underneath, and the battle they had been fighting in silence all along. It is about the helplessness of watching someone you care about struggle with something you cannot fight for them and the quiet panic that comes back every time you feel it happen again. This song means to me like nothing ever has. A year later, the version of us that dwelled in this song feels oddly unreachable. After so much time it is still difficult to forget the joy I felt waking up next to you when we were held each other tight and made promises that vanished away along with everything else that crumbled and got thrown away. I left, you left, but this song stayed, and will stay whether we do or not. This song feels almost like a photograph taken somewhere outside of time, like a single moment caught before everything began to change. It is reserved exactly as it was while everything around it kept moving, and it carries a version of us that no longer seems to exist anywhere else, untouched by everything that came after. Maybe that is why listening to it now feels so strange. For a few minutes, that place that has become almost impossible to remember briefly feels real again. Time carried almost everything else away, but somehow it missed this. Somewhere inside those few minutes, nothing has changed yet. We are still there, exactly where I left us.
