The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s “Fútbol Is Life” exhibit depicts some of the most iconic plays and political moments in the 95-year history of the FIFA World Cup with “humble” gum wrappers.

Artist Lyndon J. Barrois Sr. and LACMA curator Britt Salvesen assembled 60 works, including 40 vignettes from past World Cups and four animated short films, among them the movie “Fútballet,” which re-creates 21 famous scenes on a 50-inch soccer pitch.

I’m so honored to have been featured in a CBS Sunday Morning (@cbssundaymorning) segment celebrating some of the greatest moments in World Cup history.

One of my favorite parts of the experience was meeting the incredibly talented artist Lyndon Barrois (@itsawrapper). His work is thoughtful, powerful, and such a unique tribute to the global impact of the World Cup. If you’re in LA, his exhibition at LACMA (@lacma) is on view through July 26 and I can’t recommend it enough.

If you’re in town for the Spain 🇪🇸 vs. Belgium 🇧🇪 match, or just looking for a way to celebrate the World Cup, make time for a visit. It’s a beautiful reminder of how the game connects people through art, history, and culture.

Trust me - it’s well worth the trip. ⚽️🎨 by @itsawrapper

“if i can’t play it, i’m going to sculpt it”

For Lyndon Barrois, the game started long before @lacma

As a kid in New Orleans, he began turning his mother’s discarded Wrigley’s gum wrappers into tiny figures, first as drivers for his Hot Wheels, then boxers, teams, athletes, whole worlds. The material was small, humble, almost nothing. But in his hands, foil and paper became movement, memory, and obsession.

Now, in Fútbol Is Life at LACMA, those one-inch figures carry nearly a century of soccer history, from iconic goals to protest, politics, joy, heartbreak, and the strange emotional charge of watching nations play through bodies.
