Haus’s (Houses) were the original framily (friend family) on the ballroom circuit, also called “drag houses” or “drag families”.
In 1940s Harlem is where the origins of drag-ball culture begun. In this setting, haus’s served a greater purpose than only to compete at the ball. Haus’s were mostly made of gay, gender-nonconforming, genderqueer or transgendered people who had nowhere else to turn. For many people, Haus’s were their only family, having been rejected by their biological families, or marginalised by their community.
Today Haus’s are much more diverse, which is to say they don’t exclude non-LGBTQ+ performers. At its core is the universal message of acceptance.

Lil’ Bottom, The Great Fagliachi, Adam Apple, and Bigtop. On first glance, it might seem easy to see what the four members of the Haus of Honk have in common. White makeup, unconventional performances, and upcycled, thrifted costumes are signature elements across the board. Don’t be fooled by the razzle dazzle; the connection lies deeper than glued-together seams and greasepaint. While none of these artists could be called “conventional,” they all share the same drive for constant self-improvement and a single-minded focus on providing quality entertainment.
Their differing artistic backgrounds make them an odd bunch, but it works. Everyone brings something to share at the family table. Adam and Fagliachi, the kids of the family, have fresh ideas, energy to spare, and a new point of view on older art forms. Bigtop and Lil’ Bottom are more seasoned performers, and can provide professional guidance and artistic editing expertise. Their dynamic is quickly becoming a big, chaotic feedback loop, where they push and lift each other and everyone grows together. Even beyond the stage, and the preparation for it, they can rely on each other for encouragement and emotional support. It’s well-known that part of being queer is finding your own family, and that’s exactly what the Haus of Honk is building.
