Ermm… What on Earth is going on??

Sometimes that is exactly what lectures can feel like. That’s why it’s important to ask questions and ask them early!

3 myths about Biomedical Science

1. Biomed is ONLY for medicine rejects

Ngl, yes a lot of people that do Biomedical Science were rejected from Medicine but not all of us. I did not apply for medicine so they could not reject me! I rejected them 😅

2. If you studied Biomedical Science, when you graduate you are automatically a Biomedical Scientist

There are a few requirements you need to meet in order to have the title of Biomedical Scientist in the UK.

A. Complete the IBMS registration portfolio
B. Be HCPC registered
C. Obtain the IBMS Certificate of Competence

3. If you do Biomedical Science you can only work in a Laboratory

There are so many roles you can do with a Biomedical Science degree that do not require you to be in the Laboratory at all. You could mix it up and have the best of both worlds (wet and dry lab) or completely pivot. It’s up to you!

POV: You study biomedical Science… and live life too 👌

Biomedical science can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to consume your entire life. 🧬✨

A few things that have helped me:

🗓️ Plan your week before it starts

📚 Stay consistent instead of cramming
✨ Understand concepts instead of memorising
📖Study a little every day
✅ Consistency beats perfection
🙋‍♀️ Ask for help early
🧠 Use active recall & spaced repetition
🧡 Protect time for friends, hobbies, and rest
💤 Prioritise sleep, it is non-negotiable

Your degree is important, but so is your wellbeing. You don’t have to choose between academic success and enjoying life - you can build both.

Biomedical Science can be fun, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say it can be a rollercoaster.🎢 From applying to University 🎓, getting in, exams 📝 , coursework, work experience 👩‍🔬, finding a job after graduating 🧳 and then progressing graph 📈. It has been a world wind so far and I’m only just getting started!

The chaos is part of the process and I wouldn’t change a thing! I can look back and laugh in retrospect 😅 but at the time it felt like life or death. Life will always make a way. It’s just usually not the way you think. I know it’s easier said than done but try to enjoy the process because it goes by so quick. You’ll blind - really slowly (that’s a joke) and it will be over. Make memories and enjoy the journey!

Here’s a list of UK universities that offer an undergraduate IBMS-accredited Biomedical Science degree. 🎓🔬 Save this for UCAS season! 📚

Before you accept that Biomedical Science offer... 🧬👀 Make sure your degree is IBMS accredited to increase your chances of becoming a Biomedical Scientist right after graduation. ✅

It could make all the difference!

Check the official IBMS website for the full list of Universities, which may be updated regularly.

🚨⚠️ 🚧 UPDATE 🚧⚠️🚨

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) offer IBMS accreditation for their POSTGRADUATE Biomedical Science Degree (Medical Microbiology) Masters degree ONLY, not their Undergraduate Biomedical Science degree. That’s why it’s important to check, check and check again! Things are always changing.

POV: Scientists eating a lil snack after handling some of the most toxic chemicals known to mankind.

Going from handling chemicals with names you can’t pronounce to demolishing a packet of crisps in the corridor. 🚨➡️ 🍟

The transition from “don’t touch your face” to “pass me the crisps” is surprisingly fast. 🧪😂

Nothing makes you appreciate a snack more than taking your PPE off after spending hours pretending every bottle is plotting against you. 🥼

I promise we all wash our hands thoroughly before and after entering the Laboratory. 💯
