Nobody remembers your rough drafts

You're worried about showing work that isn't perfect yet. But here's the thing: people only see what you actually finish and share. All the messy versions before that stay with you. The fear of judgment keeps more work hidden than actual criticism ever could. Ship the thing, then make the next one better.

Proverbs 22:6

This Bible verse has stuck with me since I was a kid growing up. Now that my kids are 11 and 10, I’ve come to realize just how much truth there is in it.

Parenting isn’t always about the big moments. It’s the everyday stuff. Teaching them how to work, how to stay disciplined, how to handle frustration, and how to keep going when something is hard.

Even something as simple as boxing.

The rounds. The repetition. The small improvements. Showing up even when you don’t feel like it.

I’ve realized that’s really what parenting is too.

Small wins. Daily lessons. Consistency over time.

They may not remember every lesson I teach them, but I hope they remember that I showed up, believed in them, and helped prepare them for the road ahead.

Still learning. Still teaching. Still raising them. 🙏🥊❤️ by @itsbriyon

The people you see every week SET THE TONE.

I used to think discipline was a private thing, something you did alone at a desk. Then I noticed my best months all had the same people in them, and my worst ones had the same late-night group chat. Nobody in that chat was doing anything wrong. It just cost me an hour a night and I kept paying it. The fix was small: one dinner on the same evening every week with two friends who actually finish things, and quietly letting a couple of other plans stop happening. I did not announce anything. Six months later the work is steadier and I am not sure that is a coincidence. If you are trying to change how your week runs, look at who is in it first.

Sleep first, then everything else

For years I treated sleep as the thing I got to once the work was done, which meant I rarely got to it. Now bedtime is fixed and the work has to fit around it. What surprised me is how much faster I am in the morning when I'm not editing through fog. The late hours felt productive but most of what I made then, I redid the next day. It isn't a reward for a good week. It's the reason the week goes well at all.

The work nobody checks IS THE FLOOR.

The interesting part of anyone's practice is the part nobody photographs. It is the hour of editing after the fun part is done, the file named properly instead of untitled-final-3, the guitar picked up on a Wednesday when no one asked. Nobody is checking, which is why it is so easy to let go, and why letting go costs more than it looks like it should. I have found that writing the rule down helps more than trying to be disciplined about it. Not a big list. One sentence about one thing, kept somewhere I will see it when I am tired. Then a short look on Sunday to see whether it held. That is enough to keep the floor from dropping, and the floor is what carries you through the weeks when you are not inspired.

Sleep is the work, not the reward

I used to treat sleep as the thing I got to do after everything else was handled, which meant it kept getting handed the leftovers. The nights I went to bed at midnight always cost me the next morning, and the morning is where the good work happens. So now bedtime is decided in advance, same as a meeting. Some nights I miss it, but it's a rule I'm breaking rather than a choice I'm making at 11:40 with a screen in my face. The difference is small and it changes everything about how the next day feels.

A choice you remake every day WEARS THIN.

The days I get real work done are rarely the days I felt sharp. They are the days I had already decided what I was doing before I sat down. Choosing in the moment sounds flexible, but in practice it just hands the decision to whoever is tired and hungry at 6pm. So I moved the choosing somewhere calmer: Sunday evening, one page, a few plain rules. Same training days, same short list of meals, one task that matters written down before the week starts. It is not strict, it is just quieter. When the question is already answered, the only thing left is doing it, and that turns out to be the easy part.

Sleep is the work, not the reward

I used to treat bed as the thing I earned after a good day. Which meant on a bad day I stayed up trying to fix it, and then the next day was worse. Now the light goes off at eleven whether the work is finished or not, because the version of me that starts at seven with seven hours behind him is worth more than the extra hour I'd have spent tired and stubborn. Nothing I've made after midnight has ever survived the morning. The rest isn't what's left over, it's what makes the rest of it possible.
