Hello Instagramers !! Hope you’re all doing good.
Have you ever seen something or been somewhere that’s really inspired you? Well a couple of weeks ago as some of you will know I ran the Tor Des Geants Ultra Marathon in the Italian Alps. I went through many emotions and feelings during this race of which all is explained in more detail in my last post on my blog. This mailout focuses on one big thing that happened and that moment was coming down from the final climb of the race just as the sun was starting to rise and being faced with the most beautiful view of the Mont Blanc. I immediately knew upon seeing this wonderful image before my eyes that I had to do something with what I was seeing, so of course I took lots of photo’s, but one photo really stood out to me and I thought straight away, this sums up so much and is so fitting of the lyrics to the BirdPen song - Like A Mountain that I will hand write the lyrics over this beautiful image….So I have and I’ve done a very limited run with details below:

The Giant Dragon - Taking on The Tor Des Geants

My race started on Sunday at midday, I was in wave two , wave one started at 10am. I had dropped my kit bag earlier in the morning at the sports centre as I was waiting on a few things, which were brought to me by Julian. Julian was part of a film crew alongside Alexis and Andy who would be documenting some of my journey across the race. This is the same film crew that made the superb documentray Run Again – about me, Archive & The Spine Race. The sun was beating down on Courmayeur as everyone gathered at the start line. Music blaring, ABBA!! Nooooo!! Excited loud announcers counting down to the start. I thought of my family, my mantra and I zoned out. Be calm, keep moving, breathe, float and dance.

Steady start, like ants in a line moving up through a steep forest trail, it was warm but I’d already predicted that and was dressed in shorts and t shirt, cap and sunglasses and a heavy-ish backpack with plenty of water and hydration drinks and food to keep me going. The first stage on the counter clockwise loop in the Aosta valley course takes you from Courmayeur to Valgriscienche, all I currently remember is nothing but it being super warm and my sunglasses irritating me and being too tight on the temples of my head.

You can’t even think about the distance you have to go, you have to start with a mindset of just moving and getting into a flow, ascent by ascent, col by col, descent by descent, stage by stage. I kept myself to myself, focused and happy to be in my own head space.
