What is one of your earliest childhood memories, where you were already hiding parts of your identity?

Mine was in 4th grade, where I was already lying about who my favorite artist was, saying it was Kid Rock, when it was probably more like Selena, Fey, Thalia, or Paulina Rubio. Moments like these continued throughout my life.

It wasn’t until my 20’s when I began a journey of getting closer to my roots and being proud of my cultural identity beyond just in my home and around family.

I wrote and created Two Homes, Dos Casas and Dos Casas, so that kids didn’t have to be in their 20’s to finally begin seeing and talking about the beauty in their cultures, or in their story.

Im grateful that it is already doing this and more.

I’m so excited to share that I’ve officially launched Cultura Convos. I’ve released the first three episodes, and for now you can listen or watch on YouTube and in the next 24 hours on Apple Podcasts and Spotify too.

Cultura Convos is focused on stories and reflections of identidad y cultura (identity and culture), meant to educate, inspire, and spark what are sometimes hard conversations with ourselves and even others. I know some of you will love it and even add it to your list of podcasts 🙌🏽 .

Ultimately it’s about embracing our culturas, and all parts of our identity. I’m creating a community where we can continue this journey to become the best version of ourselves.

The older I get, the more confidence I radiate, but that didn’t happen overnight.
It’s taken years of learning, unlearning, and reframing the thoughts and beliefs I once held as truth.

So many of us are walking around carrying stories that were never ours to begin with.
Beliefs we inherited.
Labels others put on us.
Narratives we never chose.

This is especially true for those of us going through life as first- and second-generation individuals.

We’re often told to shrink (whether we realize it or not), to blend in, to erase parts of who we are.

But here’s the truth:
What you once thought was a weakness, it might just be your greatest strength.

Your cultural identity.
Your lived experience.
Your story.

They’re not things to hide, they’re things to honor.

An Author is coming to our Storytime Fiesta!
Her name is Edith Suárez Torres & we are super excited to have our very 1st storytime with an Author.

She is an Author, the host of Cultura Convos Podcast, & she cannot wait to meet you all!

We will also have Johana!
An incredible Spanish immersion teacher behind Mellifluent LLC.

Johana will be leading super fun activities that involves movement, English & spanish songs & games.

Living away from family comes with its advantages and disadvantages, so when grandma said, “Leave the house for a day. I want one on one time with my granddaughter.”

I knew I wanted a fully Spanish version of Two Homes, Dos Casas.

I wanted kids who were still learning English and parents who only spoke Spanish to be able to read it to their kids.

So the image of an abuelita reading to her grandchildren that a reader just shared with me overflows me with joy 😍🥹😍🥹

What I hadn’t thought of at the time, but now I think of a lot, is the need for Spanish only books for those of us who are deciding to only speak Spanish to our kids and want quality books in Spanish. Shout out to @maru_edutranslator for her translations.

We can’t talk about language, identity, and power without talking about Native American Boarding Schools.

This episode is one of my favorites thus far. It was another reminder that our work to celebrate our cultura while learning about our own culture and other cultures is a powerful way to seek truth and resist.

Throughout history and to this day, there are many efforts to erase our language and erase our history, yet we continue to fight and thrive in our own ways.

I didn’t know I was going to get this emotional, but this episode took me back to a memory with 8-year old me when my dual language class suddenly stopped and I was transferred to a predominantly white classroom and in a completely different neighborhood.

In this episode of Cultura Convos, I reflect on language and its connection to culture, identity, politics, and power And focus on three messages:

1. Your heritage is in your blood
2. How taking Spanish classes even though I’m fluent is already helping me reflect deeper into my identity.
3. Forced Assimilation throughout history including Native American Boarding Schools, CA Prop 227, and how we can also use politics and power to embrace Cultura and not erase it.
