Coming really freaking soon. by @itsfreakyfeeds

Welcome to Freaky Fries, AKA the love child of Gang Gang and Freaky Feeds.

I can barely put into words how appreciative I am of the love and support we received at Cheesefest over the weekend, but I’m going to try anyway.

The idea first came to me while I was on a foodie adventure in Europe and had two loaded fries that were a genuinely mind-altering experience. I remember thinking Adelaide needs a food stall where fries are the main b***h, not the side piece, and now here we are. Loaded fries might not be the most groundbreaking idea, but honestly, who the heck doesn’t love fries?!

Something like this couldn’t be done without the right people, and that’s where Nina and Morgen from Gang Gang come in. Late last year, Nina sent me one of the spots I had been to in Europe and said we should do it, and that was a light bulb moment for me. I knew we were on the same wavelength when it came to food, business and ideas.

These two women are absolute powerhouses, and I’ve been a huge fangirl since the first time they invited me in. Not just for their burgers, but for how they’ve built their business with grit, heart and integrity. To now be creating something with two people I admire feels so full circle. They’ve shown me how to lead with passion, stay grounded in uncertainty and perseverance even when things get tough. There are truly no better people I could have done this with.

I’m eternally grateful to my friends and the community I’ve built here who have cheered us on and showed up to support us, and especially to my best friend Lauren who has been next to me on this rollercoaster for nearly 18 years. She’s always the first person to hear my ideas and not once has she ever doubted me or thought they were too wild or cringe.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have doubts stepping into another food venture, especially so soon after a challenging and controversial chapter of my life. But after seeing the turnout, the smiles and the fact we sold out both days, all that fear faded. It turned out exactly how it was meant to.

Back to regular programming here for now, but if you want to see where you can get the freakiest fries in town, head to @freakyfriesworld 😻 by @itsfreakyfeeds

Michelin-recommended lunch for under $30 @kiinrestaurant

At long last, Adelaide has something to offer that no other state in Australia does, and that’s a pool of incredible restaurants recognised with a prestigious red plaque by the honorary Michelin Guide.

Contrary to what some may think, a dining experience doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. In this case, all you need is $29 for a filling lunchtime feed, while still reaping the benefits of a beautiful venue and warm, inviting service.

Kiin, a place I rave about to anyone who asks, has had its Red Curry Slider as a staple on the menu since day one. Given how beloved this dish has become among customers, they’ve decided to give it an upgrade.

You get all the same deliciousness in every bite, with a red curry patty, torched provolone, house pickles, crispy onions, mustard mayo and sriracha, all wrapped up in a full-sized potato bun and served alongside some spicy tomato fries. A truly wonderful combination of Asian-inspired flavours.

If you’re able to splurge a little more in this economy, add a couple of snacks and a specialty mocktail :) by @itsfreakyfeeds

Three dishes to try at this Vietnamese spot @annamquan.adl

When you think about Vietnamese food on a chilly night, I’m sure your mind goes straight to ordering a big bowl of pho. Not only does it warm your soul, but it also fixes all your life problems. Well, at least momentarily.

This Vietnamese spot, owned by the lovely Winnie, is built around a library of traditional recipes developed from her family’s love for food. I left the decision making in her hands and asked her to choose three dishes that she cherished.

We ended up with a beef filled table, starting with the cheeseburger spring rolls, which really need no introduction. Following that was their bò lúc lắc, a dish of marinated Wagyu beef tossed with veggies, and my personal fave. And finally, their beef rib floating in an aromatic bowl of pho.

All in all, they were comforting, hearty and fragrant dishes, done right <3

Australia’s first ever parmi banh mi @realrolls x @marcus.costanzo

It’s surprising that no one has thought of this yet, but here we are at last. A creation that has all the elements of a banh mi, but with an Italian twist.

The man who has been running around town trying to find the best banh mi is popping up at Real Rolls to dish out his brainchild, the Parm Mi. A crunchy roll filled with Vietnamese style chicken schnitzel, homemade sauce, melted mozzarella, and some pickled carrot, daikon and coriander for good measure.

As a devotee of a roast crackling pork banh mi, this was unfamiliar territory for my tastebuds, but you know what? It was very delicious. The sauce has the addition of fish sauce and palm sugar to tie in with the Vietnamese flavours of the schnitzel, so everything worked harmoniously together.

This will only be available on Saturday and Sunday, the 3rd and 4th of October, and if anyone remembers Marcus’s pop up last year, there’s a high chance of things getting a little crazy.

For all the traditionalists, you can still get your classics, plus a few other specialties here. But I think you should live your life and try something new :) by @itsfreakyfeeds

$5 Nutella on toast in Adelaide this spring at @pincodeli

It doesn’t matter how old you are. A simple slice of toast with the delicious Nutella topping will always hit the spot and bring out our inner child.

For the rest of September, Pinco Deli is serving up this Aussie favourite, made with quality bread and extra love.

And did I mention it’s just $5 a slice? No frills, just a quick and easy way to enjoy this iconic spread and celebrate life’s simple pleasures, the Nutella way :)

A belated post, but our first time prowling around the Royal Adelaide Show was a freakin’ blast!!! 😻

Nine days of early mornings, late nights and definitely not enough sleep. Hand cramps from hand-cutting countless potatoes. Tossing up between washing our beef tallow-soaked clothes or just burning them. Overstimulation from being across from the carnival games. A few technical difficulties and a whole lot of running around. Not exactly chic, glamorous or aesthetic, but my goodness, the chaos was so much fun, and all the heart-warming feedback made it so worth it.

The Show was always one of my favourite memories as a kid, so I wanted to pay tribute to it by creating a nostalgic menu with the team: Chicken shop, inspired by the classic chicken, chips and gravy order from your local corner store. Meat lovers, inspired by the Aussie favourite pizza, one that I’ve had on many seedy Sundays. Bacon cheese, inspired by the humble potato bake, AKA the best homemade side dish. And classic cheese, which has been on our menu since day one and is now a staple.

Big love to the best team, who I get to call my friends, to everyone who has supported us and came by for some fries, to @royaladelaideshow for letting us in to run amok, and to our big sister @ganggang.world for showing us the ropes and lending us their shipping container during these humble beginnings. Next stop… we’ll tell you very soon.

Also, I swear this isn’t a marketing ploy, but everyone’s skin was glowing by the end. Attributing it to all the beef tallow lingering in the air x by @itsfreakyfeeds

Build-it-yourself hotpot @ygfaus

Ever wondered who brought out the first ‘build-your-own’ hotpot concept? Well, if that’s ever crossed your mind, the answer is the guys behind YangGaoFu, who have blessed us with Australia’s biggest hotpot restaurant, right here in Adelaide.

That title is no exaggeration. This spot on Gouger Street spans two stories and, by far, has the most vast range of ingredients I’ve seen compared to the few other spots I’ve been to. I’m talking an overwhelming 200 options to choose from. Meats, veggies, dumplings, noodles, you name it.

They follow the same blueprint and system as the rest… Wait, no. They CREATED it. You grab a bowl and tongs, gather your ingredients, pick your broth (or go for the dry mix like I did), and they’ll cook it while you whip up your own sauce at the condiments bar for some extra flavour.

We made a feeble attempt to get through our bowls, but evidently, we were defeated. It did, however, make for a tasty and plentiful leftover lunch the next day :)

Dinner, drinks & movie night on @prospectroadsa

A few months ago, @pantryonprospect popped onto the Adelaide food scene. No need to tell you where it’s located because, you know, the name gives it away. What I will tell you is that it’s a snazzy little restaurant, wine bar and pantry all rolled into one.

We eased into the night with a few light snacks, including oysters, Gildas, olives and even a brûléed chicken liver parfait, plus a cheeky Negroni and Montenegro to finish. We showed some restraint in the food department because we had to save room for an unreasonable amount of popcorn.

Then, just across the road, you’ll find @palacenova, where all the Hollywood blockbusters await. At this current time, I’d say there’s no better date night movie than Spider-Man, and it’s essential to pour an entire packet of Maltesers into your popcorn and share a bottle of red. YES, you can order drinks at this cinema!!!

TY for wining and dining us x

Best food deals in Adelaide — PART 13

Given that we’re in the midst of winter, you probably wouldn’t be inclined to visit a spot by the beach… unless, of course, they’ve got a deal good enough to rope you in.

Back in the day, if you were at the Ramsgate Hotel on a Friday night with $25 to spend, you’d probably drop it on a couple of vodka sodas. But these days, we’re being a little more responsible and going for their Spicy Duo deal instead.

Every Friday between 3–6pm, that’ll get you a freshly shaken spicy margarita and a plate of hot honey fried chicken. No crazy frills, just a nice bevvy and a meal with a little kick to ease you into the weekend.

And if you were wondering, Thank F$#K It’s Friday isn’t a thing anymore, but you can still have a good time here with this deal :)

Back again, professing my love for @mybarossa 💌

It was only last year that I truly experienced just how much beauty there is in the Barossa, and I’m eternally grateful they invited me back for a winter escape. But this time, I got to bring my mother dearest along for her birthday.

Every time I step into a new place in this region, I think to myself, “How cool is it that this exists right here in our backyard?” I truly believe there isn’t a single place you could go wrong here. Every stop has its own charm, and every visit leaves me wanting to come back.

With visits to Vino Lokal, The Farm Eatery, Millon Wines and Fino, it felt like we spent the entire weekend in a food coma. I mean that in the best way possible, because every meal was incredible. There were also plenty of local wines to sip, although only I got to enjoy them, as my mother doesn’t and never has liked alcohol (wild, I know).

Beyond the usual wine-and-dine experiences, there’s a live cooking demo at Maggie Beer Farmshop Indulgence that not only lets you learn, but taste-test along the way. And something that really evoked some past memories was the Vasse Virgin Natural Perfumery workshop. It took me back to being a child, getting into my mum’s perfume collection and mixing all the scents together.

The most special part, though, was looking at my mum in those moments and remembering that she was once just a little girl, growing up in a village and dreaming of seeing the world. This may just be a slice of what’s out there, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we are truly blessed to have a place as magical as this right here on our doorstep.

Thank you, Barossa, for yet another unforgettable weekend away. Thank you to all the passionate people who make this place what it is, and thank you to my Mum, who was evidently very enthusiastic about joining in on the content. I can see where I get it from now.

Giant squid & halal fried skewers @tiger_skewers

If you’re well immersed in Adelaide’s food scene, I have no doubt you’ve seen variations of this giant squid on a skewer at festivals. The good news is, there’s a little street food-style shop serving them up seven days a week.

Beyond this ungodly fried creation, they have a fridge full of self-serve meats, seafood, vegetables, and other bits and pieces, all skewered on a stick to stay true to the shop’s name.

Basically, you browse, make your selections, choose your spice level, hand your tray over, and they’ll fry everything up for you. You should probably also add a matcha to your order, because you’ll need something to help wash it all down.

I won’t tell you which skewers to order because that all comes down to your own tastes and preferences. However, the giant squid and chicken skin are both a must.

Just be wary of the spice levels if you aren’t accustomed to heat. The flavour was fab, but it had me sweatinggg :’)
