⚡️Will be cracking the tequila tonight to 21 years of Leo the Libran lion…shapeshifter, music-maker, deep feeler, loskop seeker, nimble-footed, stylish cat. Mothering you is a ride and a privilege my darling firstborn; I see and adore you. ⚡️ by @itsgeorgiablack

Sunday Family. Huge 🙏🏽 to Marc Algranti and Laurent Biztot for joining the dots that led to the goddess Fatoumata Diawara in our midst and on our pod. A forever memory for Littlegig and The African Imaginary.

Thank you Ake Book Festival for this fine collection of people you brought together!

Our collaboration with Åke in November in Nigeria was a riveting step into the unknown. Now in its 12th year, Ake was started by the formidable Lola Shoneyin - festival director, author, publisher, bookstore owner, firecracker, hype-master, and the ultimate community creator.

The African Imaginary held a dinner for 100 people in a perfect lounge-slash-club space, part of Ikeja’s new hot-spot IKOKO. There were no hierarchies between literary superstars (like Booker prize winner Bernadine Evaristo), festival headliners, friends of Ake and book lovers of all kinds - including members of the fantastically-named African Speculative Fiction Society.

As numbers for our dinner swelled during the planning stage, Lola laughed and said, “In West Africa you need to make space for amazing people who will just arrive!”

Here’s to new ways of doing things, and to blowing the world of The African Imaginary wide open!

Music: ‘Ready or Not’ arranged by Tshego Moeng and performed at the launch of The African Imaginary in Cape Town in September 2025.

In a life-so-far of experiencing so much beauty on the continent, this 4 day hike just jumped right to the top of the list. Wild Child you guide the precious Pondo Trail of the Wild Coast with a magic touch. (Jet, Emma and Siya - storytellers, singers, leaders and sweepers - just wow.) Beloved Stevie & Camilla Whiteman, thanks for creating this crazy commune! I feel bathed in awe and love for these people, all people, this coastline, our country, this continent, our planet. Plus. I laughed til I cried. THE BEST to be blown open like this! 🙏🏽 by @itsgeorgiablack

A year without a Littlegig wouldn’t be right!

We are inspired by creativity born and raised on the continent. And by places where people gather to talk and exchange ideas - whether in bygone salonnières or in town squares. Our first Littlegig Literary Club, held in association with Open Book Festival, will be an evening of literary talks and directional theatre and music performances.

Sat 06 Sep, 5-10pm. R2,500 per person. Includes dinner by an award-winning chef. 60 guests only. Note that there will be no line-up announcements before the event, and the venue will remain secret until the week before, because we all need a little surprise in our lives!

About the ticket allocation process:
This is our first event of its kind and there are very few tickets available. For this reason anyone wishing to attend will need to apply to buy tickets. We are committed to building a diverse audience of African fiction and culture-lovers. There will be book talk, so if you’re not into that, please sit this one out! There are also 2 sponsored / free tickets available for book lovers who find the price prohibitive.
