Brothers (2023) was the first project I directed at Hofstra. Being for an intermediate project, the only stipulation we faced was to create a full film with NO dialogue. Simple, right? Well… maybe less so when you decide to write a script involving a young boy wrestling with the guilt of his brother’s accidental death while also stuck in a toxic home environment.

However, despite the self-inflicted difficulty, I couldn’t have asked for a better team of cast and crew who were patient with me throughout the process and really understood the vision of what I was going for. And that made all the difference.

Thinking back on “I’ll Call Ya (2022)”, a lot of thoughts come to mind. @kess1790 wrote an incredibly moving yet grounded script; the story was rooted in veterans returning to civilian life while struggling with mental health. This theme pushed us to dig deep and work as a collective to produce a film that encapsulates the weight of these challenges while also trying to stay true to Keith’s vision and experience.

At this time, I was just turning 20 and had only one real short film under my belt as a cinematographer. I felt truly privileged to be offered the chance to work on this piece regardless of my age and experience and it helped shape the foundation of why I appreciate filmmaking so much. This film wasn’t born out of a desire to “look pretty” or “win festivals”. It was a fully human desire to work through traumatic experiences and unresolved emotions. It doesn’t tell the audience how to process these experiences but challenges them to recognize those feelings and the importance of checking in with the people you care about. You truly never know what someone is going through. And that, to me, is the true power of film. It’s a window where anyone can glimpse the emotions or experiences of someone else yet leave feeling like they can better understand that experience themselves.

All this is to say, this film holds a special place in my life and I can only hope to work on other projects in the future with people who can bring the same level of willingness, integrity, and understanding to films that deal with serious topics.

Bit of a throwback with this one but Training Wheels (2022) was the first short film I had the privilege to shoot. It was a massive undertaking for a small team and included building an entire jail set from scratch, but in the end, it was very worth the effort. More to come soon!
