Sometimes when your career evolves, people assume you’ve left the profession behind.

I haven’t. I’m still a dental assistant and a dental hygienist, and both have played an important role in shaping the professional I am today.

I’ve spent 24 years in dentistry, with a career that has taken me from clinical practice into public health, education, leadership, entrepreneurship, speaking, and writing. Through all of those experiences, I’ve never lost sight of the foundation that started with caring for patients.

That’s one reason Dental Hygiene Month means something different to me now.

I’m celebrating the incredible work dental hygienists do every day, but I’m also celebrating the possibilities that exist beyond traditional clinical practice. Our education, experience, and skills can take us into spaces we may have never imagined when we first entered the profession.

I often encourage dental professionals to think beyond the question, “What can I do with this degree?” and consider something much bigger: “What kind of impact do I want to make with everything I’ve learned?”

Those are two very different questions, and the answer can change throughout your career.

Happy Dental Hygiene Month to my fellow RDHs! 🦷

Your career can continue to evolve, and there’s nothing wrong with embracing the opportunities that come with that growth.

I’ve never really been a flowers kind of girl.

If you wanted to buy me something, a good book would have made me much happier than a bouquet!

But the older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve come to appreciate having fresh flowers in our home. I picked up these roses 🌹 while grocery shopping, and they brought me so much joy.

It reminded me of the gorgeous arrangement I received from the attendees of my very first Legacy Scaler Conference. They surprised me with flowers as a token of appreciation for hosting the event, and I’ll never forget that thoughtful gesture. The arrangement was created by @blourish in Atlanta, whose stunning work is now exclusively for corporate events.

It’s funny how our tastes change over time. I’m still a book girl, but there’s something about fresh flowers that makes me smile ❤️.

Benito Chiquito had his very first grooming appointment! 🐶🐾❤️

I don’t know who told this little gentleman he could come into our lives and completely steal our hearts, but here we are!

He’s growing up so fast, and I couldn’t resist sharing his first little spa day with you all.

Now, I need to know from my fellow dog parents: Am I the only one who gets ridiculously excited about a puppy’s first haircut? 😂❤️

I’m convinced that one of the best things we can do for ourselves is make time for the things we genuinely enjoy.

For me, lately, that’s been Cuban salsa and bachata! I’ve been having the BEST time learning (and still having fun while making mistakes!), meeting new people, and getting back into dance, something I’ve loved since I was younger.

So here’s your reminder to find a little joy this weekend. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant.

As for me, I’ll be somewhere in the Piedmont Triad shaking my tushy! 😂💃🏽

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how many promises we keep to everybody else.

The meeting.
The deadline.
The project.
The appointment.
The person who needs us.

We show up.

But the promises we make to ourselves?

Those can somehow become negotiable.

So lately, this has been one of mine.

Move my body.
Take care of myself.
Even when the day has already been full.

I’m learning that taking care of myself doesn’t have to be another thing I perform perfectly.

Some days it’s a great ride, dancing or a walk.

Some days I’m just proud I got on the bike or moved my body 😂.

All of them count.

And I’m getting much better at letting that be enough. by @itsjasminhaley

Ten years ago, I could not have imagined what DeW Life would become or how many women would eventually find their way into this community.

As we prepare to celebrate the 10th anniversary of DeW Life this November in Charlotte, I’ve been thinking a lot about the conversations we’ve had over the years, the women who have stepped forward to lead, and how much we continue to learn from one another.

There is a chapter in Breakthrough to Excellence called “The Cost of Playing Small,” and I keep coming back to it.

I think a lot of us know when we’re doing it. We know when we’re holding back an idea, staying quiet when we really have something to say, questioning whether we’re ready for an opportunity, or convincing ourselves that we should just be grateful for where we are even though we know we want more.

I’ve done all of those things.

What I’ve learned is that playing small has a cost. It can mean missing an opportunity or slowly losing confidence in your own ability to make a decision. Before you know it, years can pass with fear, other people’s expectations, or simply choosing what feels safest having more influence over your life than what you actually want.

That’s a big part of why I wrote Breakthrough to Excellence.

I wanted to write something for the person who knows there is more in them but hasn’t quite figured out how to move from knowing it to actually doing something about it.

And maybe that’s why seeing this little book reach #17 on the Amazon bestseller list last week meant so much to me.

Because I know what it took for me to stop playing small, too.

Still smiling about this one. ❤️

I woke up this morning at #36 😭🎉

Yesterday at 7:00 a.m., Breakthrough to Excellence, Second Edition was sitting at #1,406 in one of its Amazon categories.

Then #140.

Then #75.

And this morning…

#36 in Career Advancement & Professional Development.

I am so incredibly grateful.

And here’s the part that makes this even sweeter: I went into this launch after barely posting for months. I gave myself about 2½ weeks to put together a strategy, reached out to the network and communities I’ve built over the years, asked people to support me and you all SHOWED UP.

You purchased, shared, reposted, texted friends, sent screenshots, and cheered me on.

At one point, I saw another ranking sitting somewhere around 1.4 million and thought, Well…maybe I made the wrong decision 😂 . This morning, that same ranking was 58,210.

What a lesson this has been.

I started this launch wanting to see how far we could take this book. What I’m walking away with is an even greater appreciation for the power of community, consistency, asking for support, and the network you build long before you ever need it.

And we’re not finished yet.
