I didn’t just beat cancer — I became stronger because of it.
44 hospital visits. 6 rounds of TCHP. 11 HP cycles. 2 ER trips. IVF treatments. Countless tears, prayers, and moments I didn’t think I could keep going.
But God was within me the whole time — steadying my hands when they hurt because of neuropathy, quieting my fears when the pain hit too hard, and reminding me that this battle was never mine alone.
Through every needle, every sleepless night, every prayer whispered through tears — He carried me.

Two days ago, I had surgery to remove the mass on my left breast. Leading up to the procedure, countless people would ask me ‘how do you feel?’ or ‘are you nervous?’, but I realized shortly after that I didn’t know what to say or how to answer those questions anymore. I think overtime, in the healthiest way possible, I’ve become desensitized going through treatment in the hopes that it wouldn’t be as much of an emotional burden on me. Sometimes this worked, sometimes it didn’t. Regardless, I’m using this post as a means to express both my resilience and vulnerability during this unimaginable time. I’m a 23-year-old cancer fighter who continues to work as an RN and goes to the gym when I’m physically able to…that being said, I’m giving myself credit where the credit is so due. I genuinely look forward to the days where my treatment is behind me… not only for myself intrinsically, but so that I can focus on sharing my knowledge and experiences and utilizing my voice to be an advocate for women and women’s health. Believe it💗 #fcancer #breastcancerawarness by @itsjessicaeve

On August 13th, I went in for my annual physical appointment. Like every year, I anticipated it would be a quick in and out visit, no follow ups, no abnormalities. It was only until my physician found a lump in my left breast when this previous state of mind, the ‘I’m so healthy, I’ve been an athlete my whole life, I have no comorbidities’ state of mind, changed in an instant.

Mind you, during this time, I had been the happiest I had ever been in more ways than I could count. In May, I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing as well as a Spanish Minor, received several accolades for my achievements, passed my NCLEX-RN in July, and landed my first dream job through Massachusetts General Brigham as a brain/neuro nurse. By September, I began my job, and moved to the Boston area. My life was aligning perfectly; the only thing looming over me was the lump I was, at the time, still unsure about in terms of whether it was benign or malignant.

On October 4th, three days after my breast biopsy, I discovered I have a grade two invasive ductal carcinoma. In plain terms, stage two breast cancer. In that moment, I didn’t know what to say, how to feel, or what to think. I was in a complete and utter state of shock. After that, I was in emotional turmoil in every way you could possibly imagine. I couldn’t BELIEVE I was a 22-year-old newly graduated nurse with no health problems and no genetic predisposition, and has breast cancer. I kept asking God ‘Why me? WHY would this happen to me, and now?’

As time progressed, I began to tell close friends and family, everyone who would tell me I’m so strong and that I “got this”. Little did anyone know, I had never felt so emotionally and physically vulnerable and weak. I’m not and refuse to let the diagnosis define me, but it is absolutely dictating my life as it affects every. single. aspect. of it.

“Wisdom is the one thing that makes growing old worth it” - Jiraiya

These four years have molded me into the person I am today in more ways than I ever imagined. I’m grateful for both the expected and unprecedented experiences and obstacles I encountered in school because with great challenge came great change. In 2017, my friend Gianna Cirella passed away due to sepsis. She was my largest inspiration going into nursing school and will continue to inspire me as I embark on my career. I can’t wait to continue dedicating myself towards a life of compassion and altruism. I am so blessed🤍✝️ by @itsjessicaeve
