Lately, I ’ve been enjoying listening to Bishop Darlingston Johnson as he preaches on what I would call some real “where the rubber meets the road” topics.

It’s not enough to simply call ourselves Christians. There are expectations for how we live, how we treat one another, and how we conduct ourselves in everyday life.

From gossip to forgiveness and setting boundaries, judging others (very interesting. Not what you think), and “Lewdness: The Sin We Try to Defend,” Bishop Darlingston has been teaching on some of those topics we may not always want to address, but need to. I appreciate how he takes it straight from the Word of God and makes it practical to how we live.

“Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…” James 1:22

I’m not a member of Harvest, but I truly appreciate his teaching. And as a Liberian, I’m especially proud to see a Liberian bishop teaching the Word with such clarity.

I encourage you to check out his messages on YouTube and add them to your listening. There’s a lot in these messages to help us learn, examine ourselves, put the Word into practice, and ultimately walk in the perfect will of God.

May God have mercy on us all. 🙏🏾

There is a reason the Bible repeatedly tells us to remember and warns us not to forget.

Memory protects us from allowing a moment of excitement to rewrite history.

Leadership is not a show. The presidency is not entertainment. It is an office of enormous responsibility, dignity, discipline, wisdom, and service.

We can be disappointed with today without romanticizing yesterday.

“…that we may share his holiness.” Hebrews 12:10

Holiness.

That’s where the story of Jacob brings me.

God’s correction isn’t disconnected from His purpose for us. If we belong to Him, He is committed to conforming us to the image of His Son. And that means there are things in us He will confront, correct, and change.

God loved Jacob, and yes, God prospered him too. He had a family, children, servants, livestock, and great possessions. So this isn’t about prosperity being bad. And it certainly doesn’t mean every difficult season is God’s discipline.

But I’m realizing how easy it is to become so focused on what God hasn’t given us that we miss what He is producing in us.

We can be asking God to change our circumstances while He is dealing with our character.

We can be asking for more while He is teaching us obedience.

We can be looking at someone else’s life wondering, God, what about me? while overlooking the work He is doing right here in us.

Don’t become so consumed with what God hasn’t given you that you miss what He is producing in you.

The correction. The pruning. The conviction. The changing of our desires. The things He won’t allow us to remain comfortable in.

That work is part of His love too.

Because His goal isn’t simply to give us more earthly things.

It is to make us more like Christ. 🙏🏾

“Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” Romans 9:13

Jacob was a deceiver. A manipulator. He schemed to get what he wanted.

And yet, Scripture says God loved Jacob.

But God’s love for Jacob did not mean God left Jacob as he was.

The deceiver eventually experienced what it was like to be deceived. He was humbled. God dealt with Jacob over the course of his life. And eventually, Jacob had an encounter with God that left him with a new name, and a limp.

Jacob became Israel.

That’s what keeps standing out to me: God loved Jacob, but He loved him enough to deal with him.

He corrected him. He humbled him. He confronted things in Jacob that needed to change.

And Scripture tells us this is something God does with His children:

“For the Lord disciplines the one he loves…” Hebrews 12:6

Hebrews goes even further and tells us why:

“…but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.” Hebrews 12:10

That we may share in His holiness. 🙏🏾

Romans 8:29 says God’s purpose is that we be “conformed to the image of His Son.”

In other words, God is forming Christ in us…our character, obedience, love, holiness, faith, humility, and dependence on Him.

And part of that is discipline. The Bible says, “the Lord disciplines the one He loves.” Hebrews 12:6.

Prosperity may come. Blessings may come. Success and provision may come. There is nothing wrong with any of those things. But those things alone are not the evidence that God is accomplishing His purpose in us.

That’s why a person can be in a difficult season and still be RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF GOD’s WILL.

Sometimes God’s work in our lives looks less like increasing what we have and more like changing who we are.

So, who are you becoming?
