This hurts so much.

On Sunday, our perfect, brave, goofy, sweet 16 year old boy Gimli crossed the rainbow bridge. With the help of a wonderful vet team, he passed peacefully in our arms at home, surrounded by love on a rare rainy day.

Gim has been my rock for the last decade & a half. We grew up together. I’ve never been away from him for more than 8 days. Tuesday will be the longest I’ve been away from my boy. At the lowest point of my life when I felt so small & scared & unworthy of love, I couldn’t check out because this perfect little mutt picked me & depended on me. Gimli wasn’t just my dog, he was my lifeline. What a gift to have your best friend by your side pretty much every day from your 20s to almost 40.

This Christmas is the 17th anniversary of bringing Gimli home. Selfishly, I wanted 1 more Christmas. So my husband Logan (who I do not know how I could even function through this without) said “he doesn’t have a calendar. Give him Christmas.” So for the last week of his life we put treats in his stocking, gave him lamb burgers, put up a few decorations, & sang along to Christmas movies with him. He was such a little angel he actually liked our terrible singing and would just cuddle up stare up at us as we tried to be every muppet in their Christmas Carol. It wasn’t too early for Christmas. It was almost too late.

My heart is broken. I’m going to be sad in a way that currently feels impossible to come back from. That’s okay. That’s grief. What a privilege to have loved and be loved by this guy since he was 4 months old. I’m so thankful to everyone who has shown us so much kindness & grace during this time.

I read this beautiful thing once that said to dogs, humans are elves; these sort of eternal beings that don’t age like they do. As Gimli’s elf, I’m proud I could make the right choice & insure that his last days weren’t his worst days, that they were filled with cheese & frozen spinach (weird fave of his), cuddling Trico, & that he made it to the undying lands as tenderly & honorably as I could manage.
