#tbt on a Wednesday.

I've been working with TeenVybe Magazine this summer, and I've really been pushed when it comes to event photography, especially in terms of the number and difficulty of events I've had to cover, but I feel like I'm a better photographer for it. This was my first Grand Gala, and I actually enjoyed it. Wayne Marshall was performing "Glory to God" here, and the entire grandstand lit up (with their phone flashlights 😂). I knew I HAD to get a photo of what was happening, so I rushed over and shot, shot, shot until this happened.

Eight months ago, if you told me I’d leave the corporate job I once loved to do full-on publication design for one of Jamaica’s leading daily newspapers, I’d have sold you a mountainside cabin on Negril’s Seven Mile Beach. 😂

Safe to say, I can design the listing now.

Many of you have known me primarily as a photographer, or more recently, the PR person for some of your favourite automotive brands. Neither of those identities has disappeared. What’s new is finally formalising a long-overlooked part of my training: graphic design.

Despite three years of design-focused instruction at UWI, I’d sworn off design as a career after receiving more B-pluses than I'd have liked for my courses, as well as hearing things like “clinical,” “highly procedural,” “safe,” and “straightforward” in critiques. So, I chose photography to occupy the centre of gravity of my professional identity; designed for myself, friends and family, and left it at that.

Then, in agencies, and later in corporate, people discovered that the copywriter, then the PR person, somehow knew what a typeface was and knew how to use InDesign. 🌚

Almost five months into my current role at The Jamaica Observer, I’m designing and paginating newspaper supplements, learning new things about software I’ve used for years, and giving a long-overlooked part of my professional skill set a much bigger seat at the table.

So, here’s just some of what I’ve been up to since May. And, before anyone asks: my camera is NEVER going anywhere. Design is the (literal) work husband. Photography is the lawfully wedded spouse 😉.

And to those undergraduate critiques: apparently, “safe” and “straightforward” look a little different when they’re sitting on a newsstand. Somewhere, my lecturers and classmates are saying, “Well, finally!” 🤣

Nah lie, da age ya serious 😳😂

2026 didn't start off like I wanted it to. I've woken up every day since January to a new hurdle to jump over, and a new fire to put out, so I wasn't too excited about my birthday (a milestone birthday, at that) being so early into the year.

But! I woke up this morning grateful for a few things: a deep anchor to craft, which has been, and continues to be, a North Star; a tight, fiercely supportive inner circle of family and friends, and a belief that whatever's coming will be so much better than what's gone.

30, I'm ready for whatever you have to offer!

Oh, and I'm grateful not to have sat in peak hour traffic for once 😅
