IT TAKES A VILLAGE 🤎

So thankful for my family, friends, professors, and my cohort sisters and brothers (captured and not captured)🫶🏽 This journey would not have been possible without the love, prayers, check-ins, messages, and encouragement along the way. Sometimes this journey can feel VERY isolating, so having people constantly cheering you on and praying for you, even in the quiet moments, truly means the world 🥹

To everybody who called, texted, reposted, celebrated me, or poured into me throughout this process… THANK YOU 🤎 None of it went unnoticed, and every encouraging word helped push me to keep going.

Now that graduation is over and life is starting to settle down again, I’ve had some time to really sit and reflect on this journey. Pursuing a PhD stretched me in ways I never could have imagined. There were moments of exhaustion, moments of doubt, and moments where I questioned if I had anything left to give. But through it all, I kept going.

This journey changed me. Not just academically, but personally. The PhD taught me that I will not always have the answers, and that’s okay. It taught me how to sit with discomfort. Sometimes that looked like reading the same journal article over and over again and still not fully understanding it the first time. Sometimes it meant asking more questions than answers. But it taught me to stay intellectually curious and to trust the process of learning, even when it felt frustrating or uncomfortable.

More importantly, Howard University taught me to critically examine inequities within education and the workforce and to never be afraid to speak up for marginalized communities. It challenged me to think deeper, question systems more intentionally, and recognize the responsibility that comes with using both my voice and my work to create meaningful change.

Somewhere along the way, I became someone stronger, wiser, and more grounded than the version of me who started this journey six years ago.

And honestly, this degree has shown me something even bigger: I am capable of anything. I truly feel like there is nothing I cannot do if I put my mind to it. Most importantly, this journey reminded me that with God, all things are possible. There is no way I could have made it through this chapter without His grace carrying me every step of the way.

So here’s to closing one chapter and boldly stepping into the next. Dr. Melissa Tucker 🤎

After years of coursework, reading hundreds of peer-reviewed journal articles, long nights of writing, and 209 pages poured into my dissertation, I can finally say I am now Dr. Melissa Joy-Marie Tucker. ❤️

I am so grateful that I was able to tell the stories of Black women and create space for experiences that are so often overlooked or left unspoken.

This work reflects the realities that many Black women carry
the unrecognized labor
the self monitoring
the pressure to represent
and the constant navigation of systems that were never built with us in mind.

Throughout this journey, I held on to Jeremiah 29:11 as a reminder that this path was always part of something greater than me, a promise that there was purpose in every step, even in the moments that felt uncertain.

This is more than a degree. It is lived experience, it is truth, and it is a contribution to something bigger than myself.

I am deeply grateful to my committee for their guidance and belief in this work,
to my family and friends for covering me in love and support through every stage of this journey,
and to my amazing husband, thank you for holding me down, praying with me, and walking every step of this process by my side 🤍

At a time when over 300,000 Black women have been pushed out of the workforce, myself included, we have to name this for what it is, not coincidence, but a reflection of systemic patterns that continue to undervalue and displace us.

But even in that truth, we remain.

We are not defined by titles or positions.
We are brilliant. We are worthy. We are necessary.
