1. Take advantage of one of the Armyโ€™s civilian training programs.

I participated in the Training with Industry (TWI) fellowship program. This gave me one year of exposure to corporate leaders and allowed me to build relationships with people who rarely dealt with the military. I learned a lot by listening to conversations and watching how business was conducted. I even learned their lingo.

2. Book a professional photo shoot.

People love visuals. To get folks to see me as a professional civilian, I had to give them something tangible. Seeing myself in a suit also built my confidence and helped professionalize my social platforms.

3. Get out your comfort zone and book informational interviews.

I canโ€™t tell you how many informational interviews I went on just to learn more about what itโ€™s like to be a leader in the corporate world. I embraced being the student and asked lots of questions. I recommend downloading the free version of Calendly to conveniently share your availability and book interviews.

4. Find a forthcoming civilian coach/mentor who can be your GPS.

When we travel in unfamiliar terrain, we use a map/GPS to get from one point to another. This person or group of trusted individuals can guide you along your journey and also introduce you to the right people within their circles.

5. Tell your story.

Practice telling your story in a manner that civilians can understand. The more you do it, the easier it will become to do at job interviews. The goal is to build relationships and bridge the gap between the 2% and the 98%. Only 2% of the US population has served in the military. That means we have to do more than the average civilian to get folks to understand us and our capabilities. As brand ambassadors of the military, we owe it to the service members who come after us. Plus, you never know who that person may know. Some people may not be able to help you at that very moment but when an opportunity to help arises, they will remember you.

After 20+ years in the military, I felt the shift. I wasnโ€™t lost. I just no longer aligned. Now, Iโ€™m on a journey to discover whatโ€™s next, and Iโ€™m sharing it in real time โ€” the wins, the questions, the pivots, the doubts, the imposter syndrome. I know thereโ€™s more to my story. Watch me discover it. #nikkiglanton #ThinkGlobal #Impact #Empower Serve taken in Atlanta, Georgia by @itsnikkiglanton

Thereโ€™s something beautiful about this season of life. Knowing yourself better, appreciating the little things, and realizing thereโ€™s still so much love, laughter, romance, and life to experience.

Making more room for softness, affection, beautiful moments, and memories worth making.

Starting my own business wasnโ€™t about giving myself a new title. It was about being obedient to what God was calling me to build next.

For more than two decades, Iโ€™ve had the privilege of serving alongside senior military leaders, elected officials, CEOs, boards, executives and some incredibly influential people and families.

Iโ€™ve been in rooms where reputation matters. Where relationships matter. Where what happens before the meeting can be just as important as what happens in it.

And Iโ€™ve learned that the leaders carrying the most responsibility donโ€™t always need another person giving them advice.

Sometimes they need someone they trust to own the work.

Thatโ€™s the foundation of how Iโ€™m building my business and why there are three ways we can partner.

You may have an important program or initiative that deserves more attention than your team has the bandwidth to give it.

You may need experienced communications and public affairs leadership without adding another full-time executive.

Or you may be at a place where your businesses, family, reputation, relationships and influence are growing together, and you need someone helping you intentionally build and steward the social capital around it all.

I bring the same things to each partnership: experience, discretion, good judgment, genuine relationships and a willingness to roll up my sleeves and work.

But above all, this business is being co-created with Jesus. I pray about what I build, who I partner with and how I serve. My faith isnโ€™t separate from my work. It shapes how I lead, how I treat people and what Iโ€™m willing to put my name on.

God. Family. Authentic connections.

Thatโ€™s the foundation.

And Iโ€™m excited to see who Iโ€™m called to build with next.

The greatest inheritance isnโ€™t money. Itโ€™s a family name people trust. Wealth can be created in a generation.

A trusted name often takes generations.

The founders and families who leave the greatest impact donโ€™t just build successful businesses. They intentionally build relationships, credibility, goodwill, and a reputation that outlives them.

Thatโ€™s social capital.

Itโ€™s the reason certain phone calls get answered.
Itโ€™s why opportunities appear before theyโ€™re announced.
Itโ€™s why people choose to invest, partner, recommend, and stand beside you.

Money can be transferred in a will.

A trusted family name must be earned, protected, and stewarded over time.

Build your business. Build your wealth.

But donโ€™t neglect the asset that compounds long after both are gone.

Build a family name people trust. #Legacy #Namesake #OfficeOfTheFounder #Partner taken in Buckhead by @itsnikkiglanton

As your business, wealth and influence grow, your reputation starts shaping your access. Some of the best opportunities never reach the general public.

For the last 25 years, Iโ€™ve worked alongside CEOs, boards, elected officials, commanding generals and some of the countryโ€™s most influential philanthropists. And Iโ€™ve seen firsthand how opportunities move.

They move through private conversations and trusted relationships.

Someone recommends a name. Someone makes a call. Someone says, โ€œYou should meet them.โ€

Thatโ€™s why communications isnโ€™t just about publicity.

It makes sure the right people know who you are, what youโ€™ve built and why your name belongs in the conversation.

A strong reputation doesnโ€™t just make you look good.

It gets your name into rooms where opportunities start, long before everyone else knows they exist. #nikkiglanton taken in Buckhead by @itsnikkiglanton

Strategic communications isnโ€™t always about publicity.

A lot of successful founders donโ€™t want more attention. And oftentimes, they donโ€™t need it.

The real equation weโ€™re solving is: Where are you trying to go, and who needs to understand what youโ€™re building to help you get there?

Sometimes that happens publicly.

A lot of times, it doesnโ€™t.

More visibility isnโ€™t always the answer. Better positioning is.
