While Dala was in the hospital this past week, just two days before he went to Heaven, I was in his closet and found this picture of me as a little girl in a frame I had made and given to him when I was young. The frame reads “Acts 20:24…That I may finish my race.” Dala has finished his race, and boy did he run this race of life incredibly well. I opened my Bible to that same verse and kept on reading. A little later in the passage is verse 35, which says, “It is better to give than to receive.”

Dala was a giver. A giver of his affectionate love, his time, and his attention. For 31 years I witnessed him give and give to his family, his friends, and his community. You could tell by the glimmer in his eyes and the smile on his face that he deeply cared. He made everyone feel known, loved, and important. He knew your name. He always spoke first. He looked you in the eyes and genuinely listened.

He was a humble servant leader in every attribute of the word. He was deeply wise in council and advice. My sounding board. The ultimate role model in business. Every big decision I faced from navigating school, my career, cross-country moves, relationships etc., he was the one who helped me discern, weigh the pros and cons, and determine the best course of action. He’d always tell me “Make a decision and move on. Don’t look back”. All the while reminding me to keep my values and faith at the forefront. Because one thing you knew about Dala - He loved the Lord.

He was the greatest cheerleader and positive encourager. Always affirming others. Never holding back to tell you how much he loved you and how proud he was of you.

Dala was and is our hero. The heart and soul of our family. The one who held it all together. He was so much more than just an old granddad. He was like another father figure, one who can never be replaced or replicated, deeply missed until we are reunited again one day.

For the rest of our lives, I think we’ll find ourselves asking, “WWDD?” — What Would Dala Do?
