I turned 27 3 days ago. This birthday I can finally say that I feel more comfortable in my own skin. I don’t have it all figured out but what I can say is that I finally feel like ItsOkay to not. I used to be consumed with should be’s and timelines. I’m releasing all dat. Cheers to another year and many more light hearted and fun years to go. Let’s enjoy this life abeg! 🧿

Okay, class. Welcome to Ecology 101.

Today’s teacher is… The Pimp.

Now, I will never tell you not to go to school and get your college degree.

I will never tell you not to get certifications, build your skills, or develop expertise so that people can trust, recognize, and validate that you have value to add—and that you know your shit.

But there is some knowledge that can only be gained through experience.

And sometimes, you find teachers in the most unexpected places.

One of my most memorable teachers was a pimp.

Well… I wasn’t actually sure what he was.

He was very mysterious. Always wearing a suit. Always seemed to know something that everybody else didn’t.

Anyway…

He taught me this:

At the end of the day, everything is an exchange.

As a living, breathing organism, you are constantly participating in some kind of exchange.

Energy.

Attention.

Affection.

Information.

Goods.

Money.

Opportunity.

Even your time.

Whether you want to acknowledge it or not, there is always an exchange happening between you and another person, between you and your environment, and between you and nature.

And once I really understood that, I started looking at people—and myself—a little differently.

Because the question isn’t whether or not you’re participating in the exchange.

You are.

The question is:

Are you conscious of it?

Do you know what you’re giving?

Do you know what you’re receiving?

Do you understand the value of what you’re bringing to the table?

Do you know what value others bring?

Are you conscious of the game?

Are you a hoe? - constantly gives access in exchange for things that don’t measure up to your own value because you don’t know your own value or because you decided those things are more important.

Are you a pimp? - someone who understands exchange extremely well, but uses that understanding to extract as much as possible from other people.

Maybe you’re neither.

Or are you somewhere in between?

The biggest lesson of all is about how you show up in the game. It says the most about who you are in the moment, whether you will survive or whether you’ll thrive. You decide 🫵🏿 who you want to be.

Firstborn. Daughter of immigrants. They’d say: We gave you opportunities we never had. Make something better of yourself.

To every firstborn carrying that weight, you are worthy of love & being celebrated whether or not you become the person they imagined. Set yourself free.

There was an artist inside of me that wanted to express. The moment I could, I let her out.
•
In College, I struggled with depression, and was suicidal.
•
I realized practicality wasn’t enough. I was following a path because it made sense to everyone else, not because it was true to me. It was life or death. Go after your dreams, or die trying.
•
I’d always wanted to be an artist—I just didn’t know how to become a successful one. (Or at least what I thought success was) So I chose the path that made the most sense to me at the time, one that gave me the flexibility and resources to invest in my creative dreams.
•
Nobody around me knew how to help me become an artist. I didn’t have connections or a roadmap. I just had faith, an idea, and enough stubbornness to chase it.
•
While I was in school, I danced. I met interesting characters and learned valuable lessons along the way.
