Atlanta is proudly the epicenter of the Civil Rights movement but we can’t move too quickly past the flip side of that coin. We were also the birthplace and headquarters of the second coming of the Klan, claiming members in all levels of city, state and federal politics. This history is crucial for us to acknowledge and learn from.

Atlanta was one of the “swimmingest cities” in the country in the early and mid 1900’s. So what happened?

I can’t help but think how Atlanta communities would have been different if Atlanta had maintained its focus on public community pools.

Thankfully some of these public pools have returned with @atlparksandrec

This video was filmed at the @eastpointhistoricalsociety.

Atlanta is changing. Good or bad, it isn’t what it once was, and will continue to change for the foreseeable future.

But you and I can make the difference in how those changes occur. It will look different for each of us, but caring and being informed are a great way to start.

I am excited for how you and I can make a difference in this city.
Happy 404 day, Atlanta!

The Atlanta Beltline Eastside Trail was completely silent last night at 7:30pm on a Friday night.

The Old Fourth Ward area surrounding Ponce City Market is one of the most densely populated areas in the city with over 10,000 residents per square mile. Yet the Beltline was empty.

Atlanta sees rain an average of 118 days a year.
Atlanta sees below freezing weather 48 days a year.

Do the businesses, employees, and residents of Atlanta only need the Beltline on mostly good weather days? The Beltline Rail (streetcar) makes the Beltline more resilient and reliable despite the weather.

And that makes us and the Beltline that much better.

Atlanta’s housing/rental market is a regular point of discussion. Many longtime residents are being pushed out with the growth and gentrification of neighborhoods while long-time businesses are struggling to stay profitable with the increased property rates.
Could community land trusts be the solution to this? Very few of us have the resources or finances to compete with the large corporations focusing on Atlanta but a community land trust changes this.
Like the story in the video, Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are able to purchase properties that typically only businesses could afford, and instead of maximizing rents, the CLTs focus on protecting and sustaining existing communities.

What do you think? Are CLTs the answer to Atlanta’s affordable housing issue? taken in Atlanta, Georgia by @itsouratlanta

Did you know this Atlanta civil rights history? The Holmes vs City of Atlanta case didn’t just open up public spaces to all Atlanta residents, but it ranks up with Brown vs Board of Education in the precedent it set for all later civil rights cases.

@artinthepaintorg is working with the Holmes family, the city of Atlanta and other local organizations to fundraise renovations for this golf course! Head that way to learn how to get more involved!

In 1969 in a small theater in Midtown Atlanta, about 70 people were 15 minutes into a controversial indie film when over 10 police officers raided the cinema, detaining guests and staff alike. The goal of the raid was to weed out known members of the LGBTQ community.
This raid, sometimes referred to as the Stonewall of the South, was a catalyst for the Gay Liberation Front in Atlanta and the first Pride March in 1971.

Take a deeper dive into this story on @archiveatlanta’s podcast episode “Stonewall of the South”. taken in Midtown Atlanta by @itsouratlanta
