Don’t chase goals. Build systems.

You’re going to keep cleaning … forever if there’s no system in place.

I’m learning this the hard way right now. I’m on week 2: tackle my messy house … all part of trying to feel less overwhelmed as a working mom of two.

If you’re new here šŸ‘‹ I’m Rita.

I’m running an experiment called The 25th Hour Project where I try routines, theories and habit building to make working mom life feel more manageable.

Every week I test a theory that’s supposed to help me become happier, more productive and less overwhelmed to see if it can actually survive a working mom’s schedule .. and make life a bit more sustainable.

šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Øif you’re also an overwhelmed mom looking to make life more manageable, follow along. Let’s see if it can be done!

That’s what I used to think anyway…

Now I’m more inclined to want my house to be functional. Not clean or pristine but for things to be in their places and the ability to actually FIND whatever it is I’m looking for!

I can’t tell you how many times we’re bolting out the door nearly late without finding the soccer uniform, the mitts… or that permission slip that ā€œwas just right here yesterday!?!ā€

Which is why, this week I’m tackling my messy house.

To do that, I’m implementing daily 10 minute resets structured around the idea that every mess is just 5 things:

1.trash
2.laundry
3.dishes
4.things that have a place
5.things that don’t have a place

Let’s see if we can do it in the pockets of time we have!

And if you’re new here…

I’m Rita, working mom of two on week two of an experiment called The 25th Hour Project where I try routines, theories and habit building to become a happier, more productive and less overwhelmed working mom (if that’s possible)… kinda exactly what I’m testing.

šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Øif you’re also an overwhelmed mom looking to make a bunch of small changes that hopefully amount to a more manageable life, follow along!

Welcome to week 2 of trying to make life more manageable as a working mom of two.

If you’re new here, šŸ‘‹ I’m Rita, working mom of two doing an experiment called The 25th Hour where I try routines, theories and habit building to become happier, more productive and less overwhelmed.

This week I’m tackling my messy house. Not shooting for the stars here, not looking for clean and pristine. I’d like to make my house functional instead.

To do that, I’m implementing daily 10 minute resets structured around the idea that every mess is just 5 things:

1.trash
2.laundry
3.dishes
4.things that have a place
5.things that don’t have a place

This is a theory I’m testing from How to Keep House While Drowning (by KC Davis).

As working moms, all we have is pockets of 5-10 minutes in our days. I’m trying to see if I can form habits that will make those 5-10 minutes work for me in the long run.

In this 10-minute tidy I tackled ONLY laundry… sorry to report back that this is not a 10 minute task (I’d allocate 15-20) for a regular load for a family of 4 based on mine.

Will report back on how the others go!

šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Øif you’re also an overwhelmed mom looking to make make a bunch of small changes that hopefully amount to a more manageable life, follow along!

You’ve got ā€œprocrastination pilesā€ all over your house too? Well, you’re in the right place.

Don’t worry, I’m not here to judge you (literally not in the position to do that, wait till you see my house).

I’m Rita, working mom of two on week two of an experiment called The 25th Hour Project where I try routines, theories and habit building to become a happier, more productive and less overwhelmed working mom (if that’s possible)… kinda exactly what I’m testing.

This week I’m tackling my messy house. Not shooting for the stars here, not looking for clean and pristine … all I want is for my house to be functional again.

I can’t keep spending all weekend cleaning my house and all week destroying it.. the cycle is driving me NUTS!!

So I’m implementing daily 10 minute resets structured around the idea that every mess is just 5 things (from the book How to keep House While Drowning):

1.trash
2.laundry
3.dishes
4.things that have a place
5.things that don’t have a place

Let’s see if I can make my procrastination piles go away for good and get a system going so that we do maintenance instead of a full overhaul every damn time.

šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Øif you’re also an overwhelmed mom looking to make make a bunch of small changes that hopefully amount to a more manageable life, follow along!

This week I’m on a mission to make my house functional. Not perfect… FUNCTIONAL.

According to @strugglecare - there are only 5 things that make up a mess: trash, laundry, dishes, things that have a place, things that don’t have a place. So every day, I’ll devote 10 minutes to addressing one of these to hopefully make my home and therefore my find function better. Let’s see if it can be done!

If you’re new here, I’m Rita, working mom of 2 running an experiment called The 25th Hour where I try routines, theories and habit building to make working mom life feel more manageable.

For the last week I have been counting backwards 5-4-3-2-1 and DOING.. instead of overthinking.

Let’s makeup my face and make up my mind about it.

According to @melrobbins acting on an impulse to do something this way ensures your brain doesn’t talk you out of it.

And I gotta say, I agree.

Here’s what I learned:

- I can do hard things if I don’t let my brain get a say

- I have no problem getting out of bed very early most days (had two very rough mornings due to kids’ wakings and my own restless sleep)

- Small tasks like drinking water before coffee in the morning, clearing out the kid-toy filled bathtub before stepping in the shower, unloading the dishwasher before breakfast… all exponentially easier to do when done without thinking - you see it needs doing 5-4-3-2-1 physically get up and do it

… however, the 5-second Rule isn’t some magical uber that’ll drive your task to the finish line so bigger jobs aren’t for this.

The verdict: I’ll šŸ’Æ keep using it BUT for smaller tasks.. as my own ā€œmomifiedā€ rule - 5 under 5 - so 5 second rule for tasks that take under 5 minutes.

If you’re new here, I’m Rita, working mom of 2 who refuses to believe survival (which, to be clear, has been my mode of operation for 7 years now) is the only way for working moms.

So, I’m running an experiment called The 25th Hour Project where each week I try routines, theories and habit building to make working mom life feel more manageable.

šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Øif you’re a fellow overwhelmed mom, follow along and let’s see if we can change that.

I’ve been surviving for so long, I think I accepted that as a permanent state of being.

But there’s this part of me that simply refuses to believe this is it.

So I started an experiment where I am testing out theories, habits and routines that are supposed to make us happier, more productive and less overwhelmed.

I’m calling it the 25th Hour Project … because I’m absolutely dying to find a way to do more with the 24 hours I have.

Each week I’m trying out one small thing (because frankly that’s all I have time for) to see if it’s actually helping my life feel more manageable.

🄱if you’re also tired of being tired, follow along and let’s see if we can make working mom life a little more manageable

Apparently you only have 5 seconds to do something before your brain can talk you out of it.

My brain has successfully talked me out of picking up bath toys for about 7 years.

It’s now been almost a week of showering without being worried about stepping on a f%<king stegosaurus.

I guess we all have a different definition of bliss. This is mine.

I’ve been using @melrobbins 5 second rule to tidy the tub so I can give myself one space where I get to not feel overwhelmed.

the next time your kids finish bathtime - count 5-4-3-2-1 and tidy the toys with them, no matter how tired you are. I guarantee, tomorrow you will be thankful.

If you’re new here, I’m Rita, a mom of two on a quest to make working mom life feel more manageable. Every week, I’m trying out a small habit, routine or theory that’s supposed to make us happier, more productive and less overwhelmed and sharing whether it actually works for a busy working mom with 0.5 seconds of spare time.

I’m calling it The 25th Hour Project… because I wanna see if I can get back an extra hour by making the most of the 24 I have. Girl math.

🄱 follow along if you’re also a working mom wanting to make life feel more manageable and less overwhelming

This week, I’m testing out the 5 second rule theory as part of my journey to become happier, more productive and less overwhelmed as a working mom of 2.

An experiment I’m calling the 25th Hour Project… because I could really use onešŸ˜…

This week’s 5 second rule isn’t where you eat something after it’s fallen down for less than 5 seconds… obvi I can nail that one any day.

I’m talking about @melrobbins 5 Second Rule.
Basically, when you get an impulse to do something count backwards 5-4-3-2-1 and do the thing, before your brain has time to talk you out of it.

This should get us started with shit we’ve been procrastinating, planning on doing and ultimately not doing.

So far, I’m successfully:

🄱getting out of bed early without snoozing

šŸ’§drinking water before coffee
(squeeze a lemon into it and a dash of salt- this is supposed to restore our body from nighttime)

šŸ’„putting on 5- 10 minute makeup before leaving the house

šŸ‘–looking less like Adam Sandler when I leave the house

I’ve also cleaned a bunch of small things around the home just by acting on impulse and not giving my brain an opportunity to tell me ā€œthere’s no time to do thatā€.

šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøIf you’re also a working mom trying to make life feel more manageable, follow along and try this with me.

I successfully woke up at 4:30am this morning to be my new productive self… it’s now mid- afternoon and…

I AM EXHAUSTED.

If you’re new here, I’m Rita - working mom of 2- and I’m on week 1 of an experiment I’m calling ā€œthe 25th hourā€ - where I test out routines, theories and habits that are supposed to make me happier, more productive and less overwhelmed.

This week - I’m testing out @melrobbins 5 Second Rule where you countdown from 5-4-3-2-1 and physically get up to do the thing your impulse tells you to do… before your brain talks you out of it.

So far, in the last few days, I’ve been using the 5 second rule to get myself out of bed, without snoozing… and let me tell you. It does the trick!

I’ve also cleaned a pile of random crap that’s been living rent-free in my room, cleared a shower (which I typically share with about 24 species of dinosaurs and other toys)… so it does seem to work for small tasks!

The downside, my body is currently being fuelled by coffee and a dream. I think I will get used to it, because I love starting my day feeling motivated … just gotta find a way to stay motivated through the afternoon lull… without a coffee iv.

šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø follow along if you’re also a working mom looking to make life more manageable

We’ve got this! (Sorta..)

If you’ve bought the gym class membership then didn’t show up for class or set your alarm but hit snooze… you’re in the right place.

šŸ‘‹ hi!! I’m Rita, fellow ā€œplannerā€ not ā€œdo-erā€ but this week I’m DOING something about it.

Welcome to week 1 of The 25th Hour Project where I - a working mom of two- attempt to make my life more manageable and less overwhelming … by trying out routines, habits, hacks I’ve read or heard about to see if they can help me get my shit together and become a happier, healthier, more productive mom/ employee/human.

This week is all about actually doing the things you keep meaning to do. For this, I look to @melrobbins - basically the ultimate beacon of ā€œit’s never too late to get your shit togetherā€ and her ā€œ5 second ruleā€.

Mel says, if you get the impulse to do something, count backwards 5, 4, 3, 2, 1- and physically start doing the thing. This should get you to do the damn thing before your brain has a chance to talk you out of it.

I don’t know about you, but my brain can be very persuasive so this sounds like the perfect place to start if I wanna actually START.

How does the 5 second rule fit into a busy working mom’s life?

🫣 Follow along if you wanna find out. your guess is as good as mine.

I’m embarking on an experiment - each week I’ll try one habit, routine, or theory that’s supposed to make me more productive, happier and less overwhelmed to see if they actually work for a working mom with 0.5 seconds of spare time.

I’m calling it THE 25TH HOUR PROJECT.

I’ll keep or ā€œmomifyā€ what seems to be helping and ditch what absolutely has no place in a working mom’s busy life.

The goal is to find small ways to be more productive with my time, find systems that allow me to be more organized and just overall less overwhelmed and more happy. Sounds like a pipe dream when I say it out loud.

Basically, I’d love to stop being the mom who sprints their kid to school every morning looking like Adam Sandler or chases garbage trucks in pyjamas because I forgot to roll the bins out. Again.

šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøFollow along if this is you. We’ll laugh, we’ll cry… it’ll be great.
