From middle school girls just figuring life out… to women still standing next to each other through everything life has thrown our way. We didn’t just stay friends we chose each other over and over again.

This is more than friendship… this is sisterhood. The kind that holds you down in your lowest moments and celebrates you in your highest. The kind that reminds you who you are when you forget.

Giving you your flowers in that moment wasn’t even enough… because you’ve been deserving them your whole life. I’m so grateful God placed you in my life the way He did.

I HEAL DIFFERENTLY. ❤️‍🩹🕊️💈

October 11th, I walked through the gates of San Quentin Rehabilitation Center with a purpose much bigger than myself.

I’ve walked through those gates before, but only as far as the visiting rooms. Never did I imagine I’d be walking through that facility helping bring a barber battle to life for the men inside.

From the planning, floor plans, cutting, laminating, coordinating, and making sure every detail came together, I poured my heart into this. People see the finished product, but they don’t always see the work it takes to get there.

Being a woman in this industry, I’m constantly pushing myself to make my mark. I’m passionate, I’m direct, and I stand on business when it comes to my work. I’ve realized I don’t need the spotlight. I just want the hustle, dedication, and heart behind my work to be respected.

But what people don’t see is the pain I carry behind my smile. Walking through those walls was hard AF. I wanted to cry so many times, but I had a job to do. A big part of why I do this work is because it makes me feel closer to my brother. ❤️

I know what it’s like to be the family on the other side of those walls. I know what it’s like to miss someone who’s still alive. And that’s why I show up for people with so much heart. Because behind every incarcerated person is a family with a story, too.

I keep myself busy, I turn my pain into purpose, and I continue putting myself in spaces that challenge me emotionally because I know the work matters.

I do this for the people. I do this for my brother. I do this for the little girl I once was.

This was never just a barber battle. This was personal. This was healing. This was LOVE. ❤️‍🩹

A DREAM IS REALLY COMING TRUE. 💈🌱

I’ve been hosting barber battles for about six years now, and there have always been two things I dreamed about doing in this industry: meeting @vicblends and hosting a barber battle inside a jail or prison. And now one of those dreams is happening. We’re bringing a Barber Battle inside San Quentin.

Huge shoutout to @jtb707 for making the connection and extending this opportunity to us. This one means more to me than I can really explain. About a week and a half ago, my mom and I went inside San Quentin for our walkthrough. We got to talk with the men, see the facility, walk through the gym and start putting the entire vision together.

One moment that really stuck with me was creating the floor plan.

No computer. No phone. Nothing I’m normally used to having when I’m planning my events. I had a piece of white paper sitting on top of my hand, and I literally stood inside that gym looking around and visualizing everything.

Where will the barber stations go? Where will the judges be? How about the dj ? How should the competition floor flow? How many people can compete in each category? How can I make this feel like a REAL barber battle?

And I drew it all out right there by hand.

It was something I wasn’t used to, but in that moment I realized even more, I was meant for this life. I didn’t need a computer or a phone to see the vision. I used what I had: a piece of paper, my hand, that gym and six years of experience doing what I love.

I looked around an empty space and could already see the barber battle happening.

There are so many things I normally use for my battles that I can’t bring inside a prison, so I’ve had to switch things up, get creative and accommodate the environment. But one thing I refuse to change is the experience.

I want these men to feel like they are at a REAL barber battle.

I’ve been spending my days and nights planning and making sure we have everything together. The chairs, clipboards, pens, materials, score sheets and every little detail. Instead of our regular competitor badges, the men will have name tag stickers that I created differently so we can write their names on them.
