To My Best Boy,

To know you is not only to love you, but also to be entirely consumed by you.

For a decade, you’ve carried yourself with the grace of the most extraordinary jet-propelled bowling ball, yet you have always had the softest touch with little humans. Stubborn and completely absurd, but somehow you always knew when someone needed you, and you gave them exactly what they needed, exactly when they needed it. Your personality was always impossible to contain, managing to let me know exactly what was on your mind even without the benefit of a shared language.

But we developed our language over the years.

We spoke through hugs when either one of us needed them. Through looks of love and annoyance and defiance and joy. Through nudges and grunts and sighs and smiles. Through the way we always found each other in our sleep, no matter where we were or how far apart we had somehow ended up.

We’ve spoken our language for ten years, and for every second of that, I am grateful.

Ten years of knowing each other without needing words. Ten years of you teaching me how to love someone completely and without reservation. Ten years of waking up beside you, coming home to you, worrying about you, laughing at you, apologizing to you, talking to you like you could actually answer me, and somehow always knowing that you understood.

We figured out through our language that this trip to Charleston was going to be your last, and you’ve done a great job of making the most of it. You have soaked up the sunshine and the new smells and the new places and the new people. You have reminded me right to the very end how completely you intend to live.

I don’t really know how to carry on without you. But you taught me how to persevere through almost anything, so I guess I’ll just take the Earl approach.

Fuck it. Smile big. Make a lasting impression.

You left your mark on everything you touched. On every person who loved you. On every place we lived. But most of all, you left your mark on me.
