Life was a struggle as a kid. Summer thunderstorms in Pittsburgh were a brief moment of joy where I’d stare out the window finally able to disconnect from the harsh reality I was in. Those storms will forever live with me. We can use the memories of chaos and hurt from the past to remind us that they didn’t take us down…and neither will those to come. Our parents kicked you out when you were only 13 years old. We didn’t see each other for 23 years. You fought through the hardest obstacles as a single mother of 2. You’ve come out as the sweetest and kindest person I know. You made a choice to keep a kind heart, and always pushed to bring us back together as a family. Burning man is not great because it’s a time to party. Don’t get me wrong…it’s the biggest and wildest party you’ll ever witness, but that’s a tiny part of the joy you experience.

It’s the roughest environment with the softest heart. You’re transported both back in time and to an alternate universe where you depend on yourself and the kindness of others to get through the week. You push your boundaries to connect with yourself on a deeper level. You physically labor for a week in the 100+ degree desert heat to build your camp and community. You’re cast adrift into a sea of loving humans that you connect with on their own cosmic journey. You come home exhausted but totally remembering why you’re on this planet, connection and love.
