I LOVE learning & exploring deeper theories about the Garinagu . Our connection to the Arawaks & the Kalinago + the relationship with West Africa (that is explained in more detail in Theory Two ) , has had me in going down a rabbit hole of knowledge for years 🤓

This is “ Theory One “ in my research project , which is what I’ve been told about who we are growing up. The DNA components spoken of in the video is new information to me but beyond interesting .

For Hispanic Heritage Month I shared some of my work with @thegarifunamarket 💛🤍🖤

Identity is an interesting concept when I think about being Garifuna . I consider myself Afro-Latina because my people settled in Central America ( Guatemala, Honduras , Belize , Nicaragua) and adopted the Spanish language .. but in Reality I don’t think Hispanic people really know about us or consider us apart .

I consider myself Caribbean because the Garifuna people settled in Saint Vincent as early as the 1300’s and lived sovereign and against colonial rule until the documented Black Carib Wars in 1769- 1797. Yet, Again, when I speak to some folks from the Caribbean they too, have no idea about us .

In my research I’ve learned that Garifuna people are descendants of The Mail Empire in West Africa … and yes , Again … when I speak to West Africans some have no clue we exist.

My life long project & Exhibition : Garifuna Nuguya - The Presence of BLACKNESS in Guatemala is a deep dive into the narratives of the origin story of the Garifuna nation 💛🤍🖤

Who are the Garífuna? 🇭🇳🇬🇹🇧🇿🗺️

A people whose history is rooted in resistance, resilience, and cultural preservation.

With ancestral roots tracing back to the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent, the Garífuna emerged from the blending of African and Indigenous Caribbean communities.

Despite centuries of colonial conflict, displacement, and attempts to suppress their identity, the Garífuna have continued to preserve their language, traditions, music, and deep sense of community.

Did an interview with Taylor @raicesmaya.la while in LA this summer .. & some of the comments are interesting . It’s difficult to capture someone’s perspective in a short clip so here’s some back story on my mindset & my thoughts about what I read . @

“ My comment under the post : Growing up Garifuna & being the first generation in America is a different type of mind fuck.
I’ve always loved and embraced my Blackness, yet I feel unconsciously a lot of immigrant elders see proximity to Black Americans as a threat. I acknowledge the ignorance of some of my elders, and I refuse to let that be my mindset. Bridging paths toward connection has always been my goal.
Through my work, I feel like I’m able to do that. “

Growing up Garífuna in New York meant navigating identity and belonging.

@itswavyfox shares how she sometimes felt like she wasn’t Black enough for her Black friends or Latina enough around her Puerto Rican and Dominican peers. At times, that left her feeling isolated and unsure of where she fit in.

However, her family’s support, especially her mom’s reminders of their Garífuna roots, helped her feel grounded in who she was.
