During and after my ankle surgery, I gained a decent amount of weight due to just being inactive. Since then, with my fair share of ups and downs, highs and lows, strides and setbacks, I’ve lost a little over 10 lbs and I’m only 5 lbs away from my current goal weight.

Slow and steady. None of this happens quickly, and RARELY in a straight line.

Give yourself some grace when you hit a setback but don’t throw in the towel. Keep that goal in sight.

Attending seminary was a life-changing experience. Yes, understanding the process of exegesis, methodologies of textual, source, form, and literary biblical criticism, and the socio-historical context in which these texts were written was extremely formative, but just learning to think theologically was a game-changer.

The narrative arc of scripture is that of liberating love. That liberating message was echoed by the Prophet Micah and Jesus of Nazareth, by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Maya Angelou, and by our contemporaries today fighting for a more just and equitable world.

Our liberation is intrinsically tied up in the liberation of our neighbor. Liberation from hatred, bigotry, and injustice. “No one is free until we are all free!”

At the end of the day, you cannot “love thy neighbor” if you vote to harm them, disenfranchise them, or oppress them. To my black and brown siblings, my LGBTQ+ siblings, and any others, I stand with you.

May it be so. Keep fighting the good fight.
