my parents hadn’t been back to spain since ‘92 when they were only dating. when my mom acted for a theater company in tijuana and my dad tagged along with the crew as a musician for the tour that’d eventually take them to europe.

my mom tells me she’d mime on the beach for money when they eventually ran out, just so they could stay a little longer (if that tells you anything about the kind of adventurers my parents are).

when your nuclear family migrates to a different country, every holiday feels the same. it’s always us four around a meal with slightly elevated dress. and we’re not religious, but there’s a prayer in the room that reeks of american dreams — that settles into the empty seats.

when your nuclear family migrates to a different country, any day could be Christmas. any day can sing revival and celebration.

so i’ve been thinking a lot about my dad’s hands on the steering wheel, taking us somewhere new. weaving through the spanish countryside just as he’s done on the veiny roads between mexico and the states my whole life. how my parents’ restlessness has hummed its own curious song within me.

i’ve been thinking about how dreams can change. how the american promise land my parents devoted their lives to was just a trap door.

and despite the constant hopelessness i feel within this country, i still see my parents dream somewhere new. I still get to watch them grow up, too. it still feels like christmas everyday.
