It’s IU Bloomington’s most famous street fair: First Thursdays! 🎨🎶🍔

Each month during the fall and spring, hundreds of students and Bloomington residents gather at the Fine Arts Plaza for live performances, hands-on activities, great food, and plenty of Hoosier spirit.

Our IU School of Nursing Bloomington students were there, helping visitors create encouragement cards for friends, family, classmates, and colleagues; handing out some awesome IUSON swag; and providing free Narcan kits and training to anyone interested.

A HUGE “Thank You” to everyone who stopped by to write a note of encouragement and say hello! #iubnurse #FirstThursdays by @iub.son

IUSON Bloomington was once again proud to take part in this year’s Hoosiers Outrun Cancer.

Together with more than 5,200 participants from across the Bloomington community, our Red Scrubs Runners helped raise more than $495,000 to support the Cancer Support Community South Central Indiana and its free cancer support services, including counseling, wellness programs, support groups, and direct financial assistance for patients and families.

This year, the School of Nursing added something new to the event.

Visitors to the IUSON booth were invited to create handwritten encouragement cards for race participants, survivors, caregivers, and others affected by cancer.

These messages of support reflected the caring & community spirit at the heart of both the event and the nursing profession - as evidenced by the many people who stopped by our booth to express their appreciation for nurses and the care they provide.

IUSON Bloomington was proud to serve as sponsor to an event that brings the community together in celebration & remembrance, while helping local individuals and families have access to critical cancer support services.

TODAY’S RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT: What shapes how often nurses screen patients for substance use disorder?

In his newly published Journal of Clinical Nursing study, Dr. Greg Carter examines the education, workplace conditions, readiness, and competence associated with screening among 1,365 U.S. nurses. Findings include:

*Nurses reported screening more frequently when they had completed substance use disorder continuing education in the past 12 months, reported supportive organizational policy, and reported greater harm reduction readiness and professional competence.

*Nurses unsure of whether their organization supported screening screened least often.

*These associations remained after accounting for other measured factors. Opioid stigma did not show an independent link with screening frequency in the full analysis. Neither did nursing role, race, gender, or years of experience. This does not mean stigma is unimportant to the quality of care.

*The findings point to recurring education and clear, visible screening expectations as priorities for nursing leaders. Because this was a cross-sectional survey of self-reported practice, it cannot establish cause and effect.

Please join us in welcoming John Spencer, our new Financial and Program Support Coordinator in Bloomington. To help you get to know him, John has shared a little about himself:

"I have worked at Indiana University in a variety of finance-related roles off and on since 2020, serving in several departments across the university. My educational background includes degrees in Business Administration and Theology.

My wife and I have been married for 36 years, and she also works at IU. Our daughter and son-in-law are both IU employees, as well. We are proud grandparents to six grandchildren, four boys and two girls.

Outside of work, I enjoy home improvement projects and spending time outdoors. Running, hiking, and just about any outdoor activity are among my favorite ways to stay active. I am also an avid football fan, and IU football has been especially enjoyable to follow in recent years!

I look forward to working with each of you and contributing in any way I can to help our School operate effectively, efficiently, and as smoothly as possible.”

We are excited to have John on the Bloomington campus and look forward to the experience and support he brings to the School. If you’re in the HSB, be sure to introduce yourself and join us in giving John a warm IUSON welcome!

Our latest Research Spotlight features a new study by Dr. Greg Carter published online by the Harm Reduction Journal.

Dr. Carter’s study sheds new light on the barriers to Hepatitis C treatment. Key findings include:

“Everyone said yes to treatment. Yet 1 in 5 remained untreated.”

A connected pathway illustrates that all 71 study participants reporting a positive hepatitis C test were willing to accept treatment, while 14 of 71 had been diagnosed with hepatitis C but remained untreated at the time of the survey.

The graphic states that willingness was universal, but treatment access was not.

Additional findings show that 95.8% reported a hepatitis C-related stigma experience, 62% received their diagnosis in a hospital or emergency department, 2.8% through a syringe service program, and 53.5% knew untreated hepatitis C usually persists for life.

A dream can travel farther than one generation.

Inspired by her mother’s dream of becoming a nurse, Charleigh Carter, BS’26, came to IU as a first-generation student determined to build a career helping others. Scholarship support made it possible for her to earn her nursing degree.

Her story is the promise behind IU’s Never Daunted campaign: when one student has the support to pursue their ambitions, the impact never stops with them.

Today, Charleigh cares for patients as a registered nurse at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The support that opened a door for her now reaches every patient she cares for.

We were proud to recognize Charleigh during Saturday’s Never Daunted Moment at Memorial Stadium. ❤️

See how you can help more IU students carry their impact forward at the link in our bio. IU alumna, Charleigh Carter, smiles and raises both hands on the field at Memorial Stadium as a packed crowd fills the stands behind her. She wears a white IU top and event credentials. Text reads, “Mission Moments. Never Daunted: IU’s Campaign for the Future.” by @iub.son
