What is Curly?

My entire life, I’ve been treated differently due to the color of my skin, however it’s not just me as this is also the reality of billions of people.

I wanted to find a way for society to combat these issues by providing a platform where we can learn about and educate others on why this is a important topic, how we can listen to others personal experiences, and how we can lead a hand to those struggling with racism and encourage them that they are perfect they way they are.

That is why I created Curly! Based on the curly hair of African descent, I created a space where we can learn, listen, and lead and hand in order to eliminate racism and colorism.

I will educate you all the successes and ways black people have impacted the world. In addition, I will interview fellow friends who will share their stories on how people of different races and backgrounds have also shaped the world and overcame obstacles!

Whether you want to learn about history, someone who wants to help others, or someone who has experienced racism and needs positive reinforcement, this platform is for EVERYONE!

Change doesn’t happen with one person. Together as a society, we will create a more inclusive world where everyone is considered equal to each other and inspire the next generation to learn, listen, and lead!

Hello everyone! My name is Keira Dotson, and I’m your International United Miss Colorado! 👑

💙I’m currently an undergraduate student at the University of Colorado studying to get a bachelor’s of science in public health! I plan on going to PT school to earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree!

💙My biggest passion in life is ballet, I’ve been dancing since I was 3! I also do a little bit of modeling on the side as well! When I’m just chilling at home, I’m usually baking, crafting, playing video games, or watching the Colorado Avalanche!

💙As an African American woman, I’ve experienced first hand what it’s like to be discriminated solely due to the color of my skin. This is why I created Curly! A safe environment that educates people on past and present history, the racial barriers that people still face today, and how we should Listen, Learn, and Lend in times of need!

💙Im still new to pageantry and have competed with IUM for the last 2 years. What I really like about this system is the focus on sisterhood and helping others! That’s primarily why I fell in love with pageants, I want to help those in need and make a difference in the community!

📚Most school donations happen at the start of the year in August, however it’s very con for students and kids to lose or run out of supplies.

For most of us, that’s an easy fix as we can simply go to the store and buy what we need, however this type of privilege isn’t an option for a lot of families. I’ve recently learned that some families struggle so much with finances that they can’t even afford to get their kids pencils for school.

I hope my donations to the local county schools donation center will help low income families make their child’s school year not only easier, but much more enjoyable!📚

❤️I’ve talked about my support for blood donations many times throughout my reign. It makes me feel good knowing that my blood donation is going to someone who needs it the most.

Thats why I’m excited to announce that I’m hosting a virtual blood drive!

🩵Finals🩵

The IUM finals were held on Saturday! Now that Im back home and finally caught up on sleep (lol), I wanted to share my experience!

As some of you may know, this is only my second ever pageant. Additionally our state directors had to unfortunately retired at the start of the year, so I had very little training leading up to internationals.

Despite having little experience, I had an amazing time at internationals! More importantly, I was able to manage my anxiety/stressors throughout the week and was able to confidently step on the stage and truly enjoy the spotlight!

While I didn’t place in the top 10, I left internationals with new friends, lasting memories, and more experience to prepare myself for the future!

✨Optionals✨

Honesty is one of the HEROIC values of IUM.

Today was an incredibly hard day for me during the optional awards. While I was happy to place 2nd runner up in talent, I was absolutely heartbroken on not placing for spokesmodel.

Having worked all month to perfect my speech and to have everyone backstage, in the audience, and online tell me how incredible my speech was, only to not even place runner up out of 7 girls really hurt. I truly believed that I must’ve given a horrible speech and completely wasted my time and effort.

After hours of reflecting and talking with my parents, I realized that at the end of the day I went out on stage and gave a very important speech on racism in Canada. I gave awareness to the issues surrounding the First Nations people and the children affected in the 1960s. People came up to me to tell me my speech gave them shivers, made them emotional, and that I spoke the truth. This type of impact is bigger than any award placement.

While these optional results are still going to take time to digest, at the end of the day I flawlessly educated everyone on an important topic and overcame one of Americas biggest fears, public speaking.

I hope to give more speeches in the future that are better than the last!
