A new workforce development program by two Indiana University School of Nursing professors aims to increase the number of registered nurses prepared to serve rural and medically underserved communities across Indiana.

Dr. Kathleen Williamson and Dr. Deanna Reising have designed the Indiana Rural Nursing Workforce Pathway and Clinical Residency Network to strengthen the pipeline of practice-ready nurses who understand the communities they serve and where resources may be limited. A multi-year Health Resources and Services Administration grant will help make the initiative possible.

Congratulations to IU School of Nursing in Fort Wayne BSN Class of 2026 graduate Lis Navarro! 🎓🎉

Q: Why did you choose nursing?
A: I chose nursing because I genuinely love to be there for people, build meaningful connections, and support our community. Although I was afraid of healthcare as a child, I came to see it as a field defined by resilience, hope, and strength.

Q: Why did you choose the IU School of Nursing for your nursing education?
A: I chose the IU School of Nursing at IU Fort Wayne because of its strong clinical opportunities and supportive learning environment. While attending, I found another version of myself built on growth, strength, resilience, and kindness, along with several support systems that helped shape my journey as a future nurse.

Q: What is your favorite memory from your time at the IU School of Nursing?
A: My favorite memory is building relationships with classmates, faculty, and staff who continuously pushed me to grow. It’s a blessing to uplift others.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: After graduation, I plan to begin my career as a pediatric nurse, where I can care for children and support families during vulnerable moments. Personally, I hope to continue learning, supporting our community, trying new things, and stepping out of my comfort zone more. I also value spending more time with loved ones and creating countless meaningful memories along the way.

Q: Anything else you’d like to add or highlight?
A: Throughout nursing school, I had the opportunity to grow as a leader by serving as President of the IU Fort Wayne Student Nurses Association (SNA), where I loved advocating for students and getting involved with our community. I am also honored to have received the Ruby Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice and Service, which reflects several blessings. I’m incredibly grateful for the mentors and support system that helped me become the person I am today. This journey has shaped not only my career but who I am as a person, and I am excited to continue growing and learning. by @iuschoolofnursingfw
