Surveillance, technology and education—three crucial factors that when successfully integrated, help keep our food safe.

On this World Food Day, Associate Professor Eduardo Ximenes in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at #iusphb weighs in on the recent uptick of food recalls, the role the FDA and USDA play in said recalls, and the utmost importance of accountability.

For instance, a “Food Traceability Rule” is set to be put in place nationwide starting July 20, 2028 where businesses that process, pack, or hold foods in the FDA Food Traceability List (such as cheeses, leafy greens, and certain fruits and vegetables to name a few) track specific supply chain events and maintain meticulous records.

“We have good technology and resources, great people working in the field, so in my view we have the tools to keep in the best way possible our food safe—we just need to use them wisely,” says Ximenes.

To hear more from Ximenes on food safety precautions on his recent guest spot on Indiana Public Media, check out our link in bio.

Every story is unique, and every journey matters.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Day, #iusphb recognizes the work being done by doctoral student Kelsey Sinclair in the Department of Applied Health Science to advance awareness and survivor wellness.

Sinclair’s research involves examining how biopsychological protective and risk factors across racial identities and body weight status determine health outcomes. She hopes the data she obtains will be used to identify how to improve key areas of survivorship.

When asked about current issues that the public is not aware of regarding help and support for breast cancer survivors, Sinclair notes how the disease has very high survival rates, but most people do not know that there are significant disparities in survival, especially in Black and African American women.

“A healthy lifestyle can mitigate some of these disparities, which is why helping breast cancer survivors support a healthy lifestyle in a way that accommodates cultural context, management of lasting cancer symptoms, and the busy and hectic lives of survivors is so important,” says Sinclair.

Can your esthetician save your life? #iusphb Ph.D. student Alexandra Hughes in Applied Health Science thinks so.

Hughes was recently awarded a National Institutes of Health F31 grant of $50,114 to fund a research project that will survey salon professionals across Indiana to assess their willingness to deliver brief HPV vaccination messages effectively without accidentally diagnosing or offending their clientele. Hughes hopes to encourage the idea of “if you see something, say something.”

Read more about how Hughes is putting a spotlight on the vital role salon professionals play in public health via our link in bio.
