Our walk on the Salkantay Trail ended on the 4th day at the village called Hidroeléctrica, and from there we walked along the railway line to Aguas Calientes, the town that serves Machu Picchu. This final walk was interesting as we walked through a couple of tunnels, erroneously as it turns out - we should have taken a different track down onto road, but hey ho we survived as a train came along just as we exited the first tunnel. Stayed the night at Aguas Calientes, had our first proper shower and then at 6am the following morning walk up the 2000 steps to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Wow! Words can’t really describe how magical that place is. Worth every step of the way. #machupicchu #peru #salkantaytrek #magicalplace #spiritual taken in Machu Picchu by @ivar_mountbatten

Currently in Peru with no 3 daughter and have just finished a 5 days of hiking the Salkantay trail to Machu Pichuu. What an incredible experience and great to spend some quality time with Luli. I have always advocated spending one to one time doing fun things with each of my kids. I climbed Kilimanjaro with my eldest Ella back when she was 16. Then a few years ago I cycled across Kenya for a week with no2 Alix, so this is my swan song with my baby, thank goodness, as I recon I’m getting too old for this. The Altitude is a real killer and walking up to the Salkantay pass at 15,100 feet (4,600m) is like walking in treacle! What was interesting was that I was the oldest by almost 40 years in our little group of 7, with most being in their late teens or early 20’s like Luli. I felt like I was back in my gap year again as the vast majority of all the walkers (and there were hundreds) were in their 20s - rarely did you see anyone my age. It was well worth it - but not doing it again! Great to walk with @mika_heer @_eliakoch_ @colinb0617 @themanjohan

I couldn’t be happier to announce the engagement of my eldest and most precious daughter Ella @ellamountbatten to her fabulous boyfriend Fergus @wright.fergus.
