I can't believe I even have to post this but since this world is absolutely insane and self-destructive right now, I thought it best to be clear:

My personal opinion is that AI has no place in writing or editing fiction. It was built on stolen voices, on manuscripts that took years to write and years to edit. They are works of art, passion and hard effort, and have earned their place.

As a writer myself, I'm nervous about the change in the industry. As a disabled person, I'm worried as to how it will impact jobs such as editing (jobs that can help people like me earn an income). As an editor, I'm angry that greed and speed has led to shortcuts being popular.

If you're on the anti-AI train, welcome. If you're not, then I respect your opinion but my page and my business are not for you.

Human creativity is worth the work, is worth protecting – and it will be us humans who need to defend it. This is how I feel I play my part in that.

Fantasy authors!

Whether you're just starting out or have been doing this for a while, planning your novel can be overwhelming. I'm going through it now with a rather ambitious idea in a subgenre I've never written before!

For me, the trick is to start with the basics:

🤔 What does the story need to make sense?
🤔 What does the worldbuilding need to support the story?
🤔 What do the characters need to play their part?

🏆 What does the READER need when it comes to planning, so that they have the best, most engaging experience and have everything they need to understand what's going on?

The last thing we want as writers is for our readers to ask why something is happening, or to question logic or point out flaws, and that's why planning is so important.

If you plan the basics and grow from there, you can avoid unnecessary scope creep and get to writing that fabulous draft!

I used to find it hard to let go of planning every little detail, thinking I needed to know exactly how everything works, or the childhood friend of every character, but the truth is that you can over-plan a novel – especially if it keeps you from starting that draft.

This weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the @waterstonesnotts launch for @victoriaaveyard and her new book, an adult fantasy called Tempest! I'm eager to dive into this one (pardon the sea pun), to fall in love all over again with beautiful, cinematic writing of one of my favourite authors, and to appreciate such a gorgeous hardcover with divine sprayed edges!

Hearing her talk about her writing process, her love for the genre, her understanding of the industry, and her hopes for the future made for a phenomenal evening!

She has such knowledge and passion, such creativity and expertise – and as someone who also visualises scenes as movies in my head, and who had a family link to beautiful Scotland, had me hooked from start to finish!

I'll be writing my thoughts into a blog post soon (which you can find on my website – link in bio), but this final photo is me telling Victoria that the pep talk she kindly gave me in a private meeting a few years ago set me back on my path as an author.

The day after that motivational talk, I dusted off my draft, donned my writing hat, and worked hard to get my book ready for publication next year

Here's a handy checklist for making sure you're market ready! Obviously, not everyone will use a professional editor for each stage listed here, and some people may edit it themselves if they're confident enough in their skills. The important thing is that, no matter how you do it, the book is READY.

Then, it's time to do a deep-dive analysis on it and on the market. Knowing who you're marketing to, why and how is absolutely key to finding the right audience for your novel.
