Finished product.

I built this timber frame back in June — then the clients took it the rest of the way. Their own roofer did the metal roof and trim, and they handled the electrical themselves, pot lights and ceiling fan included.

The frame is mine: curved arch braces, traditional joinery, and a tongue-and-groove ceiling that looks as good from underneath as the whole thing does from the yard.

This is my favourite kind of job — one solid structure that turns a backyard into the place everyone ends up. I'm booking about a month or two out, and a build like this starts with a conversation well before spring. If one's been on your list, let's talk.

Something a little different from the shop. I wrote a book for kids who want to build — coloring, a bit of math, and step-by-step instructions for building their first work table with a grownup. Ages 7–8.

Happy Thanksgiving, folks. Take a sip every time I say "and." 🦃
Good at building. Questionable with words.

One of those projects where the material means as much as the piece.

4 of 7 doors shipped for the Rowe job. They're built from timbers pulled out of the clients' century home reno — barn beams the client's father or grandfather reclaimed to add onto the family home, way back when. I think they were from a tobacco kiln; they smelled like cured tobacco when I cut them.

Same beams as the trailer load back in August. The wood was already part of the family before I ever touched it — now it's going back into the house it came from.

Ever thought about having a piece custom made, but had no idea how that even works? Fair — most shops keep it a black box. Here's ours, start to finish:

1. You send the idea — what you're after, rough dimensions, any photos or sketches you've got. A phone pic and a napkin drawing are a fine start.
2. We work it up into a written estimate: the work, the materials, delivery and install, plus what's assumed and what isn't.
3. The estimate spells out the deposit to book the build. Material-heavy or special-order pieces can need more than 50% — that's in writing before you commit to anything.
4. Drawings and sign-offs happen wherever the project needs them. And if the design changes after you've approved it, we agree the change, the cost, and the timing in writing first — nothing moves until that's settled.
5. Then we build it.

Got material with a story? Beams from the family barn, a tree off your own property, lumber that's been waiting decades for the right project — send photos of that too. We'll tell you straight whether it'll work for what you have in mind, and if it will, it becomes part of the piece.

Custom work isn't fast, and it isn't the cheapest way to fill a room. It's for the piece that doesn't exist yet — the one that has to fit your space and the way you actually live. If that's what you're after, now you know exactly how it goes.

Send us your idea and we'll take it from there.

Reclaimed lumber: 1, planer: 0.

The planer found the screw I missed. Took a bite out of the knives too — swipe for the damage and the culprit.

That's the tax on reclaimed stock. Worth it anyway.

Throwback to this one — a 20x50 carport we assembled and raised in Lakeside. The timbers came from trees the clients planted themselves 38 years ago; we milled them down with @kintore_custom_hardwoods and re-sawed everything to finished dimensions. That's me drilling out dowel holes with the Wood Owl auger bit. Trevor Couckuyt helped me assemble the whole frame and did a bunch of the machining with me, and the whole thing is finished in Sansin — my go-to on almost every frame. Not a complicated build, but a special one.

From the archives: the last piece of this timber-frame build — the ridge beam, end grain and all.

Dovetail connections cut with the @lignatool system: the ends tie into the trusses, and the rafters lock straight into the ridge. And this isn't some trim router — it's one of the biggest handhelds you can buy, running an oversized bit. Massive thing, honestly intimidating the first time you pick it up.

Timbers came from @hoffmeyers_mill

First load went to site, then back to assemble the trusses on the trailer so they could lift straight off. A lot of work for a small building — and worth every hour.

Thinking about a timber frame of your own? Send us the idea.
