THIS WEEKEND! Don’t miss 3731 by @suittsyouwrite at @hawriverballroom // for tix visit link in bio
🎥: @iximchemedia

About 3731:
3731 is an intimate, multimedia solo performance that turns the stage into sacred ground. This show explores how objects become portals to memory—unearthing stories of devotion, sacrifice, humor, and loss through poetry and song. Layering ritual, storytelling, sound, and projection, the piece asks how we carry our mothers with us, and how remembrance itself can be a radical act.

About CJ:
CJ Suitt (he,him/they,them) is a performance poet, arts educator, and community organizer from Chapel Hill, NC, whose work is rooted in storytelling and social justice. CJ was the Inaugural Poet Laureate of Chapel Hill, NC.

CJ co-directed, produced, and starred in a historical reenactment of the 1947 Freedom Rides, performed at many national and local music festivals, including Gnarnia, Shakori Hills and Bonnaroo, and acted in a production of Hands Up: 6 Playwrights, 6 Testaments. His career as an educator has allowed him to work with young people awaiting trial at the Durham Youth Home, older inmates whose voices have been silenced within the Orange County Correctional Facility, and high school and college-aged men pushing to redefine masculinity in their schools and communities. Additionally, he has collaborated with organizations such as Transplanting Traditions, Benevolence Farm, and Growing Change on the intersection of storytelling and food justice.

He is committed to speaking truth to power and aims to be a bridge for communities who can’t always see themselves in each other. taken in The Haw River Ballroom by @iximchemedia

On Friday, we continued the second session of Common Threads: A Media Storytelling Workshop Series, Threads of Voice. Where we invited students to explore interviewing as a collaborative and relational practice.

In partnership with @iximchemedia, participants learned how to craft meaningful questions, listen with intention, and engage in thoughtful dialogue. Through paired interviews, students practiced using their voices to build shared narratives grounded in care, respect, and justice.

This workshop continues the series’ commitment to combining critical making with critical care, creating spaces where media becomes a tool for community connection and storytelling.

Today we opened our Common Threads workshop series with Threads of Light, led by Roderico and Emily with @iximchemedia.

Through hands-on activities, students explored photography not just as a skill but as a way of storytelling rooted in memory, identity, and community. From light and framing to captions and reflection, participants co-created images that honored both their own stories and those of their peers. 📸

A huge thank you to Iximché Media for guiding us in practicing photography as a form of care, representation, and shared meaning.

Next up → Threads of Voice: Interview Workshop on October 3. Stay tuned 👀

What stories do we carry with us? What stories carry us?

We're getting closer to a special collaboration with Marginalia Making and @iximchemedia involving Common Threads-a three-part storytelling workshop series at NC State.

Each session is an entry point into creative practice:

Threads of Light — Photography as co-creation (Sept 19)
Threads of Voice - Interviewing with care (Oct 3)
Threads in Motion - Video editing for community narratives (Oct 10)

Come to one, or weave them all together. Each workshop offers a tangible takeaway and a chance to reflect on how storytelling can be an act of care, connection, and imagination.
FREE + open to all NC State students. No prior experience needed.
