The question “What are foundations and NGOs doing?” is one we ask often—but maybe we’re asking the wrong question. The real issue is not whether NGOs are doing enough. The reality is that they were never meant to carry the weight of an entire healthcare system. They are meant to support, not replace a functional system. A woman with antepartum eclampsia needs urgent care—ICU, emergency surgery, neonatal support. These are not luxuries; they are basic expectations of a working health system. Yet, in many cases, survival depends on whether a family can quickly raise money or find help online. That is the real tragedy. NGOs and foundations step in, and yes, they do incredible work. They save lives daily. But they are operating in a space created by systemic gaps—gaps that should not exist in the first place. Healthcare should not be a privilege. It should not depend on donations, connections, or luck. If a system is functional: *Emergencies are handled without hesitation *Cost does not determine survival *Families are not pushed into desperation in critical moments So instead of asking what NGOs are doing, maybe we should be asking: Why are they needed to this extent in the first place? Until that question is honestly addressed, stories like this will continue—and they will keep breaking hearts. by @iyanuomotoso7
