More than a decade ago, a musical encounter in Luanda brought together Angolan artist Wyza and Israeli musician and producer Izhar Ashdot.

They did not share a spoken language. What they did share was music.

With guitars, melodies, lyrics and an idea that began almost from scratch, they spent a week working together at Fundação Arte e Cultura, joined by local musicians and singers. By the end of that week, the song had taken shape, and they performed it together live.

That meeting became “Luayeka ana (Ma Niya)”, part of Ponte Cultural, a project of Fundação Arte e Cultura, initiated and produced by Israeli musician Avner Hodorov, who has led the project and its musical collaborations over the years.

Wyza passed away in 2017. With this release, we celebrate his memory, his music and the creative spirit he brought to this collaboration, allowing the music he and Izhar created together to finally reach listeners around the world.

For Izhar, the experience captured something at the heart of the project: “Most of our communication happened through music. They didn’t speak English and I didn’t speak Portuguese, but very quickly something common emerged. To me, that is a kind of a miracle. Musicians can share a language that does not depend on nationality or on the language they speak.”

Alongside his work on the song, Izhar also led the creation of the video, documenting the week in Luanda and editing the footage into the film released today. Video photography by Izhar Ashdot and Shiri Paamony Eshel. Video editing by Izhar Ashdot.

This release also marks a first: music created through Ponte Cultural is being officially released to the world.

We are incredibly excited to finally begin sharing what has been created over all these years. More music, stories and collaborations are coming, with a full Ponte Cultural album to be released soon.

שוטטו עם האצבע, בחרו, ליחצו,
