I finally received the professional scan of this painting, life-size at 600 DPI, and the detail is beautiful.This is one of those works I never really had time to sit with. When I finished it, the paint was still wet as I delivered it straight to Wolverhampton Art Gallery. It only came home last week after a couple months being exhibited, and even then, I sealed it and took it straight to be scanned.So now I’m meeting it properly too.What I know is that this painting opened up a direction I want to keep exploring: a freer, more abstract figurative approach. The sketch was refined, but the painting itself was anti-refined in the best way. Watched my 12-year-old daughter win her 200m inter-school race today.When she got home, she told me she was actually upset before the race because there was some confusion with the lanes and she got moved last minute. I explained that the distance was still the same, but I understood why it threw her off mentally.What stayed with me was what she said after.She said she used how upset she was and just ran harder.That taught me something today. Not in some dramatic way, but in that quiet way children sometimes remind you of things adults overcomplicate. by @izrahyel

‘Window Shopping’ is a tribute to the unlicensed village shops in the Caribbean, the kind of place that starts when people need to make a way.The boy is reading ‘No One Is Self-Made’ by @drkeyhallmon , while sitting inside the proof. Around him is family, community, faith, responsibility, and lessons you don’t always get from school.The title plays on buying from a window, but also on looking at what you want before it is fully within reach (window shopping). The sign, “No weapon formed against me shall prosper,” is a reminder to keep going with what you have.Which is why the shutters were built with my dad from discarded pallet wood. Something overlooked, made useful again. by @izrahyel

A village shop may begin because a family needs to survive, or because the usual systems do not give them enough access or support. But from that situation, a child can end up learning things earlier than expected.Coming home from school and minding the shop might seem like a small thing or not so fun thing, but it teaches arithmetic, people skills, organisation, responsibility, confidence, business management and an understanding of community.So while the shop may be shaped by struggle, it also becomes a place of development. A place where resilience creates exposure, and exposure becomes preparation.This piece is almost complete.I can’t wait to show you the final work and how the full concept comes together, including the handiwork of my dad.#contemporaryart #immersiveart #caribbeanart #africanart #sankofa by @izrahyel

‘Grace’ is about the moment heaviness begins to lift. The figure seems to be embraced, though it could also be an act of self-embrace. That openness matters, because grace can come from another person or from within.The light at the face marks a release of doubt, pain, and pressure, making space for softness, clarity, and the feeling that life gets better here. by @izrahyel
