If we're being honest, commentary started out on the radio because people couldn't see. Now that we can watch, I appreciate commentators like @amimaddamima who make it easy for the visually impaired to still follow along. @sportpesa make sure she is at all live sports. That's the kind of energy we want. by @izzie307

Over the past three months, I’ve been a little quieter than usual, and for good reason.

I’ve been on the ground, moving across schools in Mombasa County, Kwale County, and Kilifi County. Sitting in conversations with teachers. Watching how students interact. Standing at the edge of pitches and courts, not just to follow the games but to understand the environments around them.

I wasn’t just visiting. I was observing.

With a deeper focus now on safeguarding in sports, I started to see things differently. The structures that exist. The gaps that persist. The quiet efforts that often go unnoticed. And the shared intention across all levels, schools, teachers, parents, to create spaces that are safe for young people.

What stood out most is this:
In many cases, the foundation is already there. The question is not always what is missing, but what can be strengthened, made visible, and lived more intentionally. There is a lot to learn from what is already happening on the ground. And even more potential in how we choose to build on it.

So over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing reflections, observations, and practical ideas from this journey, particularly on safeguarding in school sports and how we can strengthen it from within.

If you work in education, sports, or with young people, I hope some of these insights resonate and spark conversations of your own. And most importantly, ACTION.

Q: How prepared do you feel to respond if one of your athletes or students feels unsafe?

For many coaches and teachers, the honest answer is: "We care deeply, but we are not always equipped with practical tools to respond in the moment."

Creating safer spaces in sports and education goes beyond policies. It also requires awareness, confidence, and practical skills that help women and girls feel supported both on and off the field.

On 11 April 2026, I will be hosting Safe & Strong – A Women’s Safety & Wellness Morning at Mombasa Sports Club.

This session brings together three practical areas that support safer environments for women and girls:

• Self-defense skills that build confidence and personal safety awareness
• Safeguarding conversations in sports spaces
• Yoga and grounding practices that support body awareness and mental wellbeing

This workshop is ideal for:

* Women in sports
* Coaches and teachers working with girls
* Teams that want to strengthen safety and wellbeing for their athletes
* Women who want to protect themselves and their families

If you lead a team, school, or sports program, you might also consider sponsoring a few athletes or staff members to attend.

Equipping even a small group with these skills can have a powerful ripple effect within a team environment.

⏰ 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
📍 Mombasa Sports Club

Safety in sports goes beyond rules on the field. It is about creating environments where women and girls feel physically safe, emotionally supported, and confident to participate fully.

On 11 April 2026, I will be hosting Safe & Strong – A Women’s Safety and Wellness Morning at Mombasa Sports Club from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

This session brings together three important elements of safety and wellbeing:

• Self-defense training – building confidence and personal safety skills
• Safeguarding in sports – understanding how to create safer sports environments
• Yoga and grounding practices – supporting mental and physical wellness

The goal is simple: to empower women and girls with the tools, awareness, and confidence to stay safe in sports and in everyday life. This makes it suitable for all women regardless of where you are on your sports/fitness journey.

As conversations around safeguarding in sports continue to grow, practical spaces like this allow us to learn, connect, and strengthen each other.

📅 11 April 2026
⏰ 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

What Does Success Look Like When We Talk About Fan Behaviour in Sport?

Last week, I shared a reflection on the importance of respect in sport and why the message “Passion is welcome, abuse is not” matters for everyone who participates in the game — players, referees, coaches, and fans included.

This past weekend, I was back in the same arena. The fans who had previously been very rowdy were still passionate and vocal, but they were noticeably more hesitant when their behaviour began to cross the line.

There was a sense that they were more aware of how they were being perceived and that certain behaviour might not be acceptable anymore.

That, in itself, is a small but meaningful sign of progress.

Funny enough, and I am pleased to have seen the positive results, there was more tension on the court this game that could have resulted into serious fights but it didn't.

When we talk about safeguarding in sport, success does not mean removing passion from the stands. Sport thrives on energy, emotion, and community support. The goal is not silence, it is self-regulation and shared responsibility.

Early signs of success can look like:
• Fans becoming more conscious of their behaviour
• Fewer disruptions that stop the flow of the game
• Coaches publicly supporting referees and match officials
• Players feeling more protected in their playing environment
• Conversations about respect continuing beyond the match

These shifts may appear subtle, but they signal something important: a cultural change in how people see their role in sport.
In the long run, success would look even deeper than that.

It would mean fans holding each other accountable in the stands.
It would mean teams communicating clear expectations for behaviour.
It would mean referees feeling confident and protected while officiating.
It would mean players competing in environments that challenge them competitively — not emotionally or psychologically.

Safeguarding in sport is not only about policies and responses after something goes wrong. It is also about creating environments where respect, safety, and accountability are normalised before problems escalate.

Trust alone is not enough to keep people safe.

We need the systems, boundaries, and accountability put in place to protect children and vulnerable adults — especially in spaces where power, pressure, and performance intersect.

As participation in sports in the continent continues to grow, safeguarding must grow with it.
