If you know me you know my military process has been an extremely long process, and i feel i haven’t heard anybody talk about an experience similar to the one i had.
Forever i had said i could never be in the military. During the summer before my junior year an Army recruiter messaged me and asked me if I had ever been interested in the military, short answer: absolutely not. So i went to the meeting, obviously. During this meeting i realized that i was really interested in the military. I could pick my job,and get a discount at lululemon. After a meeting with the Army i met with the Air Guard. i fell in love. I realized that dedicating your life (or just a couple of years) to defend the U.S. was so much more than a lululemon discount. I fell in love the the mindset “Service over Self” and couldn’t wait to turn 17 and start my process into the military. after about a year long process, I had finally turned in the last document i needed to get my waivers to enlist in the Air Guard. while waiting on my papers to process my recruiter asked me something “What if they say no”, in my head i thought that was such a silly question, because they had to tell me yes, this was my dream. A couple weeks later my recruiter called me, i didn’t get my waivers and i was officially disqualified from military service in the Air Guard. This destroyed me, i thought my life was over. a couple weeks later, a navy recruiter called me, he asked me if i had ever thought about military service, i told him yes, but i got disqualified. He told me that the navy thinks they can get me my waivers. after a meeting with him i realized i wanted to keep moving forward to enlist in the Navy. after a while i started to realize that i still wouldn’t be able to get my waivers. My newfound life dream i wanted so deeply wouldn’t work out. I felt so weak and useless, many times having thoughts about “if the military doesn’t want me how could anyone else” i was at the lowest point in my life. Until i realized that the military does not define me, i define me.
