My first foray into User Experience and User Interface Design revolved around Microbank, an online bank concept for a "younger, tech-savvy" audience.

After lots of research into my target demographics, I devised a bold, invigorating brand identity inspired by travel, adventure, and nightlife. Around this identity, I then created a suite of different screens for the app. Finally, I got very excited about Auto-Animate and put the interface to work in a prototype that was potentially just a little too liberal with the flash transitions. (Oh well. It's gotta be a right of passage, no?)

Check back tomorrow to see a video of the prototype in action! ✨

IT'S OKAY FOR IT TO BE TERRIFYING

(Click the link in my bio to read the full report on Google Drive!)

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Sean Dowling, a Brisbane-based publication and campaign designer, about her career. One of the pieces of advice she gave that resonated the most with me was "It's okay for it to be terrifying" ("it" being the leap of faith into the industry from graphic design school).

After a LOT of editing — we spoke for 2 hours and the original transcript was 14,000 words long — I set to work designing a booklet based on the interview. Inspired by Sean's focus on the arts industry, including circus, I created a cover graphic featuring a trapeze artist. I also decided I wanted the title to look like a light painting, which is an idea I had while browsing photos of fire artists with flaming hula hoops.

After some experimentation in different programs, I ended up using brushes and effects in Photoshop to achieve something close to the outcome I wanted. It was both a technical and creative challenge, but I came out of it feeling pretty satisfied! How do you think I did? 😅

Sean doesn't use any social media for her design business (what a flex, right?). But if you want to see more of her work, you can visit her studio website at dowlingdesign.com.au.

Thanks @mockupsdesign for the mockup!

Branding for Mount Glorious 🌿

Just a 45min drive north-west of the Brisbane CBD, Mount Glorious is a quaint mountaintop village surrounded by lush subtropical rainforest.

When I was a kid, my family would often go on day trips there to escape the summer heat and the fast-paced pressures of everyday life down in the city. Nowadays, I don't get up there nearly as much as I like, but it's still a place that is very close to my heart.

A recent place branding project gave me the opportunity to create a range of deliverables for Mount Glorious (swipe to see a couple of my favourites!) The logo is inspired by the Red-Necked Pademelon, a small relative of kangaroos and wallabies. It's an iconic yet elusive resident of the area, often heard bounding away from a walking trail before a glimpse can even be caught of it. As a mascot for the location, it represents novelty, curiosity and the beautiful things you can discover when you "rise above your everyday". 🦘

Alternative movie poster for The Princess Bride 🤺

This assignment tasked us with picking both a movie title and a time period out of a hat, and creating a poster inspired by a design style from within that time period.

I lucked out with The Princess Bride, and the 1900s – 1920s. The style I chose was Plakatstil (a German term that conveniently translates to "Poster Style"). I referenced the style using simple shape-based illustrations, a limited palette of bright colours, a chunky serif typeface, and a generous serving of negative space.

This project was a fantastic lesson in the creative power of limitations, and of taking thoughtful and deliberate inspiration from existing works. I'd love to do more like it in the future!

It's been a while since I've posted on this account. (To those of you who are still following me, thank you! 💚) Since I'll be graduating soon from my Diploma of Graphic Design, I'm going to start updating it with more recent work.

The brief for this piece was to create a visual representation of a song using hand-rendered typographic and illustrative elements. Naturally, I chose an Of Monsters and Men song, Slow and Steady. It's helped me through some difficult times in my life, so it was important to me that my concept honoured that tenderness.

In the end, I was inspired by the feeling of letting go of something that doesn't serve you. It's something I struggle to do, but I'm getting a lot better at it. So if you find it difficult as well, let this be a reminder that there's hope and we're in it together!
