Last weekend I was in Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. I saw over 15,000 Sandhill Cranes, six endangered Whooping Cranes, thousands of waterfowl, and thousands of songbirds. In total, I estimated I saw just over 28,000 individual birds! Read the review below on VisionMax!I recently had the chance to test out the Apexel VisionMax, which was sent to me for review, and I wanted to share some honest thoughts from an experienced birder’s perspective.First off, this is clearly designed with beginners and casual birders in mind. Setup is quick and straightforward; I had it up and running in just a few minutes. It comes with an SD card and charger, which is a nice touch and makes it usable right out of the box. It also mounts easily to a tripod, which is a big plus for stability when you’re trying to get steady views or photos.Viewing directly from your smartphone makes observing simple and intuitive, eliminating the learning curve that often comes with using a traditional scope.In terms of performance, lighting makes a noticeable difference. Colors tend to wash out a bit in direct sunlight, while they look much more natural in diffused light. In deeper shade, the image can get a bit too dark, so there’s definitely a bit of a learning curve in figuring out the best conditions to use it.Image quality overall is solid for the price point and intended audience, but it’s not going to replace higher-end optics or camera setups. That said, for someone just getting into birding, or for casual use, it’s a fun and accessible way to start capturing what you’re seeing.Overall, the Apexel VisionMax would be good for an entry-level option for anyone curious about digiscoping or wanting a simple way to start photographing birds without investing heavily in gear.As always, these are my honest thoughts after using it.
