Unicorns, Book Two, “On Heartbreak” is out today! 👏🏼💖

This book examines my heartbreak over racial injustice, as well as my formative years struggling with the conditioning that many young men receive.

Am so grateful to @zawad1mandela for making this project what it is and am floored by the affirming words from Dax-Devlon Ross (slide two).

I would be so grateful if you purchased a copy and I welcome thoughts and feedback.

I had a meaningful engagement with a masculinity affinity space this summer, using book one, “On Discomfort,” as a resource, as well as with a parents group. Please keep this project in mind as a positive resource, at a time when young men and boys need examples of healthier masculinity and belonging.

Zawadi and I are currently working on Book Three, “On Grief and Joy.” 💕

Learning about Howard Zinn and Roslyn Schecter Zinn, through Dave Zirin’s (@edgeofsports) biography, in conversation with Katea Stitt of @wpfwdc.

I had never heard of the 1949 Peekskill riots, where a violent white mob attacked a Paul Robeson concert.

The Sandbox, part two, was quite powerful and meaningful. We celebrated the life of Zilphia Horton, the cultural director of the Highlander Center who tragically passed too soon.

We have white antiracist freedom fighters as elders and ancestors and a project bringing that to K-12 white children is beautiful to be part of! 💖

I had the opportunity to facilitate a session on discomfort—using Unicorns book one—for parents and caregivers. I also co-facilitated a masculinity affinity space, multiracial and intergenerational, with @nicodemusford
All 14 of us were vulnerable, connected, and want spaces like this to exist and continue. We did a chalk activity where we buried a piece of the masks we wear. Mine was to quit “denying my sadness.” 💕 taken in Michigan by @j.biehl

In March, 2025, I was part of a meaningful, intergenerational, white antiracist curriculum project called The Sandbox, in Battle Creek, Michigan. It is being visioned by EJ McGaughy, Lexington Fate, Lynn Burnett, and many more.

I had a chance to talk for hours with freedom rider, Joan C Browning, as well as facilitate a gender affinity space for white men and boys, one of whom shared: “that is the most vulnerable I have ever been.”

Am excited for part two of The Sandbox next week that will be honoring the life of Zilphia Horton. There will be play, singing, and embodying and building antiracist culture.

They have kindly purchased 20 copies of Unicorns, On Discomfort, and I am excited to engage this personal work in a session with parents, as well as a gender affinity space for folks wrestling with masculinity. 💖 by @j.biehl

Am excited to share that book one in the four-part series, Unicorns: A Memoir for Young White Men, is available at the link in my bio!

I LOVE how this came out and that is thanks to the dynamic illustrator @zawad1mandela. 💖🦄

The first book, On Discomfort, examines my 9 years at all boys prep school in Washington D.C. I experienced that discomfort can lead to mocking humor, and cruelty, which has fear and insecurity underneath it. In my life, discomfort has been an integral, generative and positive theme, and switching majors to African-American Studies in college was a pivotal opening that led me towards personal transformation.

"Hope is a discipline.
And truth takes courage."

Those lines stayed with me.

In this episode, @j.biehl speaks to something many of us are feeling but not always naming: grief, fear, heaviness, and the pressure to keep going anyway.
