Hot days & horses!

24 years ago today I married this fly boy!❤️ It was a secret ceremony. Our wedding was planned for later, but war was on the horizon along with a deployment. Before sailors ‘deploy’ on a ship there is process called ‘workups.’ It is sort of a practice for deployments & they go out for days, weeks, & even months. During his workups, my husband was told that instead of returning from their upcoming practice at sea, they may head straight to their mission. We wanted to be married before he left & picked a day & local court office. We married, just the 2 of us, in front of strangers who looked on while standing in line to pay traffic tickets. We told no one because we wanted to preserve the integrity of our planned ceremony for family & friends.
These photos were taken many years later, by a dear friend @juliecatephoto after my husband’s last time at sea. I asked her to join to capture a few moments for our children & several young families who were reuniting after a long & rough deployment that followed a year of workups. Pilots often fly off the ship before it reaches the pier & we met them on the flightline. One returning pilot was meeting his daughter who was born while he was away, several young families had suffered great loss & strain while they were apart, & I knew the moments would be important.
I am posting these pics to celebrate our anniversary & in hopeful celebration- that perhaps the USS Lincoln may finally be returning home after 9 months at sea. Military life can be hard on even the best of marriages, most resilient of children, & on service members who take leave of life’s ordinary rhythms to set out & do extraordinary things. They make sacrifices with devotion-for loved ones, & their country-all while maintaining focus & dedication to bravely perform their enormous missions. Operations & daily life while onboard, especially in hostile areas, goes unnoticed by no one. Communication with families can be limited, & the uncertainty for everyone’s safety & well-being for those away & at home is a constant. Returning home & getting back to things is also not easy.
