After a long and exhausting personal journey, I have finally gotten up the energy to make an insta post.

On February 24th I took the first step of a 2,200 mile journey hiking from Amicalola Falls in Georgia to Mt. Katahdin in Maine. I had planned on hiking the Appalachian Trail for months, but in all honesty, I didn’t know what to expect outside of reading a few books and imagining myself chasing a bear up a mountain to catch for dinner. 🍴

It was nothing like that. Maybe one day I’ll find the words to describe this kind of journey, but as of right now I’m still trying to wrap my head around what just happened.

But what I can say is thank you. Thank you first of all to my family, who put all of their faith and trust into my instinctive survival skills and willingness to not shower more than once a week. Thank you to my family and friends for sending care packages along the trail, as well as keeping in touch with me when I needed to see a familiar face or hear a familiar voice.

Thank you to the AT support system. Although I know the majority of the people who helped will never see this, I want to say how much I appreciate the selfless acts of kindness (a.k.a. Trail Magic) from a number of people who expect nothing in return. You mean so much to all of the hikers, and these selfless acts reminded me how genuinely good people can be. I hope to pay it forward one day soon.

Thank you to the other hikers. The AT is filled with a fantastic community of thru-hikers, section hikers, day hikers, and flip floppers. Meeting you guys on the trail, in the shelters, in town, or even at the base of Katahdin on the last night gave me the energy and the positivity to keep going. Thank you all, and I hope I run into you again someday.

Thank you to Target, who sold me a fantastic $7 pair of underwear that lasted the entire trip.

Thank you to the community of volunteers who, through labor and love, maintain the trail, shelters, and most admirably, the privies, year after year.

All in all, it was the trip of a lifetime, but certainly not the last adventure of this life.

To the AT with love,

I just wanted to thank all the Heroes our country has been blessed to have. 99% of them we will never know of because they are not all over the media. But these people have done more than we can imagine. Most have given the ultimate sacrifice so we can sit here, and avoid studying by going on Instagram. Thank you for the millions who we don't know, but have saved our lives by giving their's.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 by @j.grif2
